4. How does literacy develop? “Reading readiness” … there are certain skills that kids need to develop before they can learn to read and write. 7. By the time kids enter school, they usually have some idea of how written language is used in their worlds and they are beginning to make discoveries about print concepts.

8. EMERGENT LITERACY – Chapter 3 Discussion Groups How do the authors define “emergent literacy” – what does it encompass? (look in the summary!) How does literacy develop? What is phonemic awareness and why is it important? What is inventive spelling? What are concrete words? How should you teach letter names and sounds? Discuss the activities described in the chapter that build the literacy foundation. What are some of your favorites? Why?
