2. 2
Saul had broken the
covenant Joshua had made
with the Gibeonites as
Israel entered Canaan.
God caused a drought to
be on Israel for Saul’s sin.
2 of Saul’s sons and 5
grandsons were hanged
and left hanging until the
rains came. Rizpah, mother of
Saul’s two sons,
guarded the bodies.
3. 3
2 Samuel 21:11 And it was told David what Rizpah the
daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and
the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-gilead, which had stolen them from the
street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had
hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
5. 5
13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul
and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they
gathered the bones of them that were hanged.
14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son
buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in
the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they
performed all that the king commanded. And after
that God was intreated for the land.
Saul’s past sin was paid for.
The three year drought was over.
7. 7
15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with
Israel; and David went down, and his servants with
him, and fought against the Philistines: and David
waxed faint. 16 And Ish bi be nob, which was of the
sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear
weighed three hundred shekels of brass (7-12 lbs)
in weight, he being girded with a new sword,
thought to have slain David.
David is getting old at this point, and he grew tired
in the battle and would have been killed.
Remember, David had killed one of this family of
giants many years before this.
8. 8
17 But Abishai the son of
Zeruiah succoured him, and
smote the Philistine, and
killed him. Then the men of
David sware unto him,
saying, Thou shalt go no
more out with us to battle,
that thou quench not the
light of Israel.
Too old to fight.
But not too old to
be God’s man.
Not too old to be the light of Israel, leading the
nation as God would have it to go.
9. 9
Too many men and women of God think that
Christian service is like a career in the world.
10. 10
Philippians 1 23 For I am in a strait betwixt two,
having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which
is far better: 24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is
more needful for you. 25 And having this confidence, I
know that I shall abide and continue with you all for
your furtherance and joy of faith; 26 That your
rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me
by my coming to you again.
Paul had no plans to retire and live easy.
He would serve until he died.
11. 11
18 And it came to pass after this, that there was
again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then
Sib be chai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was
of the sons of the giant. 19 And there was again a
battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan
the son of (Ja a re-or e gim), a Bethlehemite, slew
the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose
spear was like a weaver's beam.
12. 12
20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a
man of great stature, that had on every hand six
fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty
in number; and he also was born to the giant.
21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of
Shimea the brother of David slew him. 22 These
four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the
hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
War after war with the Philistines, and there
were giants with the enemy.
13. 13
Let’s be willing, yea eager, to follow our Lord,
Jesus Christ in the battle -- even unto death.
14. 14
Ephesians 6 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in
the Lord, and in the Power of His Might. 11 Put on
the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to
stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we
wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of
the darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places.
Our enemy is the kingdom of the devil.
Not people; certainly not one another.
16. 16
When will the warfare be over?
Not in this lifetime!
Ephesians 6 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole
armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in
the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand
therefore, having your loins girt about with
truth, and having on the breastplate of
righteousness; When we have done all that we know to do, we can
stand in the Power of God’s Spirit.
Don’t stoop at standing time!
17. 17
Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of
the Gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield
of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all
the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet
of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the Word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer
and supplication in the Spirit, and watching
thereunto with all perseverance and supplication
for all saints; The Christian walk
It is a long, hard battle in this life,
but the joy of the Lord is our strength.
18. 18
NIV 2 Timothy 2 3 Endure
hardship with us like a good
soldier of Christ Jesus.
A good soldier won’t desert.
A good soldier never shirks his duty.
He does not whine when things are tough.
He determinedly stands straight and fights the battle.
19. 19
2 Timothy 4 7 I have fought a good fight, I have
finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Hence-
forth there is laid up for me a crown of right-
eousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge,
shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but
unto all them also that love His appearing.
One day we can say with the Apostle Paul:
Let’s do it; with our whole heart.
Hold nothing back.
Have no reservations in your mind.
