2. What is Trigonometry?
Trigonometry is divided into two parts the first part of the word is trigon which
in Greek means triangle. The second part of the word is metry which means to
measure. So that, of course makes this word mean to measure triangles.
(Measuring sides and angles)
Until about the 16th century, trigonometry was chiefly concerned with
computing the numerical values of the missing parts of a triangle (or any shape
that can be dissected into triangles) when the values of other parts were given.
For example, if the lengths of two sides of a triangle and the measure of the
enclosed angle are known, the third side and the two remaining angles can be
calculated. Such calculations distinguish trigonometry from geometry, which
mainly investigates qualitative relations.
3. Trigonometry History
Trigonometry was first invented by the Greeks in 150 BC. It was first used
by Hipparchus, who was a Greek astrologer, astronomer, geographer, and
mathematician of the Hellenistic period. Hipparchus was born in turkey and
then died on the island of Rhodes. He is known to have been working as an
astronomer from at least 162 BC to 127 BC.
Cosine and sine was introduces by the Greeks. Later on the Chinese
introduced Tangent. Then a long time later Secant, Cosecant, and Cotangent
was introduced. Until about the 16th century, trigonometry was chiefly
concerned with computing the numerical values of the missing parts of a
triangle (or any shape that can be dissected into triangles) when the values of
other parts were given.
4. Which side is which?
Adjacent
The adjacent is the side that touches both the right angle and the
angle that is being concentrated on.
5. Which side is which?
Hypotenuse
The hypotenuse side is the side that only touches the angle that is
being concentrated on. It also looks like the longest side.
6. Which side is which?
Opposite
The last side is called the opposite side, it only touches the right
angle, not the angle that is being concentrated on.
7. Trigonometry Functions
There are 6 trigonometry functions and they are:
Sin-Sine
Cos-Cosine
Tan-Tangent
Sec-Secant
Csc-Cosecant
Cot-Cotangent
There is another was to remember Sin, Cos and Tan, and the way is SohCahToa.
