Polymer Drugs Novel Biodegradable Drug Delivery System
Roselyn Rosario a student graduated from UPR of Cayey and she continues her studies in
the states gave us a wonderful seminar of polymer drugs. Currently in her lab they are
trying to find what results may it bring by uniting polymers with morphine. Morphine is
one of the drugs most used in medicine especially as a relieve painkiller after a mayor
surgery. It is also one of the most addictive drugs that exist currently as a medicine. Ms.
Rosario shared with us the success that they have had by uniting polymers with other
medical drugs. For example, they modified a stent that is used for normalizing the artery in
your heart, by making it degrade through time. They united polymers and morphine and it
resulted positive for patient care. The objective was to reduce the tendency, addictiveness,
period of re doses of the morphine. When tested it gave them positive results in every area
they were focusing on. These results are extremely great for the medical community
because of the positive results it may bring to patients. Although there is still much to study
and much to do referring to the morphine it’s a positive start for this research.
