The perfect tense
In French, when you want to talk about an
action that happened at a specific time in
the past, you use the perfect tense.
How to form the 1st
person of most verbs
ending in –er in the infinitive:
e.g. JOUER: to play ÉCOUTER: to listen
Present tense: je joue Present:j’écoute
Perfect tense: j’ai joué Perfect: j’ai écouté
