UK Context
 UK 2008 Climate Change act set targets to reach of 80%reduction in
CO2 by 2050 from 1990 baseline levels
 Maintaining UK Energy Security
 In 2010 we only produced 70% of of consumption
 Increasing the use of Low – Carbon Technologies
 2009 - 8,000MW
 2012 - 15,479MW
 A 20% increase
UK Housing Context
 Approx. 35% of all carbon emissions from
built environment
 The average home emits over 5 ½ tons of
CO2 into the atmosphere every year
 1 kWh Gas = 0.185kgCO2
 1 kWh Electricity = 0.95kgCO2
 27 million homes in UK – 59,000
refurbishments a month to reach targets!

the houses in each of the
areas would be suitable for
substantial improvements to
their homes
On average the homes could
reduce their CO2 emissions
by >40%.
This is also equivalent to an
annual fuel cost reduction of
>40%.

Case Study – Internal wall
Insulation
Adding 75 mm of PIR insulation to an
Internal wall recues the U value from 1.76 to
0.25 W/m2K
Heat Loss reduced by > 700%
This is for an element that loses 33% of
overall heat loss.
Case Study – External wall
Insulation
Adding 50 mm of Cork insulation to an
External wall reduced the U value from
0.52 to 0.28 W/m2K.
A 185% improvement
This is for an element that loses 33% of
overall heat loss.
Case Study – Roof Insulation
Adding 50 mm of PIR insulation
between the rafters and 100mm over
the top took the U value from 0.57 to
0.15 W/m2K.
A 380% improvement
This is for an element that loses 25%
of overall heat loss.
Case Study – Floor Insulation
Adding 50 mm of PIR insulation
between the joists and 100mm of
rockwool underneath took the U value
from 0.71 to 0.18 W/m2K.
A 394% improvement
This is for an element that loses 15%
of overall heat loss.
Case Study – Windows
Converting single glazed window units to
double or triple glazed alternatives is a
possibility. U values from 4.5 to under
1.5W/m2K for argon filled d/g and
<0.8W/m2k for t/g
A 565% improvement
This is for an element that loses 15% of
overall heat loss.
