Intertextuality powerpoint
1.
2. Welcome to our tutorial!
Intertextuality is the shaping of texts' meanings by
other texts. It can refer to an author’s borrowing and
transformation of a prior text or to a reader’s
referencing of one text in reading another.
3. Where can we find it?
Intertextuality can be signified in the form of
conversations, thoughts, architecture, sounds
and physical activity.
4. How intertextuality is different to
context
When considering intertextality it is easy to get
confused with context. When texts are making a
social comment or referring to an issue, they are
not making intertextual references, they are
making referrences to what is or was happening
in the world at the time in which is it made.

6. In songs…
Taylor Swift’s song “Love Story” makes
intertextual references to Romeo and Juliet and
The Scarlet Letter;
“Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet”
8. Intertextuality in the texts we have
studied…
Most of the texts we have studied have some
form of intertextuality in them. On your hand
out there are a few examples just to give you an
idea if how easy intertextuality is.
11. Little Red Riding Hood
“Little girls, this seems to say,
Never stop upon your way,
Never trust a stranger-friend; No one knows how it will end. As you’re
pretty so be wise;
Wolves may lurk in every guise.
Handsome they may be, and kind,
Gay, or charming-nevermind!
Now, as then, ‘tis simple truth-
Sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth!”
Charles Perrault’s tale Le petit chaperon rouge, is the earliest known
printed version of Little Red Riding Hood is a morality tale that cautions
a little girl to be obedient.
12. The Wizard of Oz
In both these fantasy adventures we can
recognize fairies, ruby slippers and woodsman.
In picking up on these one can see both
Dorothy’s and Ofelia’s quest to find
independence and the empowerment of
imagination.
13. Cinderella Ate My Daughter
There are many references to Toddlers & Tiaras
that would be hard to understand if you had no
prior knowledge of these toddler beauty
contests. Much the same with references to
Disney, and the storylines of Cinderella and Little
Mermaid.
14. But how can I talk about intertextuality
in an exam?
15. In an exam make sure you give a detailed
description of the intertextual
reference, but more importantly make
sure you talk about how this reference
helps you to make meaning.
16. Summing it all up.
• Intertextuality is when you are able to make
recognize references between texts are therefore
able to understand a deeper meaning of the idea
being raised.
• Intertextuality can be found in a number of
forms.
• While an exam question may not specifically say
“intertextuality” when is says something along
the line of “how is your reading of a particular
text shaped by textual links” you know its talking
about the “I” word.
