Welcome to the training module on The Panasonic Passive Infrared Human Detection Sensor
This training module will introduce the Panasonic NaPiOn passive infrared motion detection sensor with built-in ampilfier.
The passive infrared motion sensor detects changes in infrared radiation which occur when there is movement by a person or object, which is different in temperature from the surroundings. As this sensors detects temperature differences, it is well suited to detecting the motion of people by their body temperature. This sensor also has wide sensing area.
Panasonic NaPiOn is a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor provides precise occupancy detection for automatic lighting controls. PIR sensors detect a temperature difference in the form of IR radiation from humans and animals. Output is triggered by a combination of temperature change and motion. Passive IR sensors generate no outward signal in the surrounding area and are ideal for battery powered and low power consumption applications. The NaPiOn is a fully integrated motion sensor with built-in amplifier, a multi-surface lens construction, a power stabilizer, comparator and optical filter. It incorporates all necessary components in an ingenious miniature package that is less than 10mm in diameter and less than 15mm in height including the terminal pins and multi-surface lens for standard detection type. All electronic devices are affected by electrical and magnetic fields. To minimize this effect, all electronic components of the NaPiOn sensor have been shielded by enclosing them inside a TO-5 metal can.
The NaPiOn is a fully integrated motion sensor with built-in amplifier, and a multi-surface lens construction. To make this sensor as close to plug & play as possible, it even comes with a power stabilizer, comparator and optical filter. To improve further on the performance of this device, it comes with a quad type passive infrared element to reduce false triggering and improve sensitivity.
The NaPiOn incorporates all necessary components in an ingenious miniature TO-5 package that is less than 10mm in diameter and less than 15mm in height including the terminal pins and multi-surface lens for standard detection type. This miniature package was made possible with the proprietary Microscopic Integrated Processing Technology (MIPTEC) forming a microscopic 3-dimensional circuit on an injection molded solid substrate. The extremely compact size makes the NaPiOn ideal for use in miniaturized devices.
A quad sensing element differentiates the NaPiOn and provides more sensitive detection zones than a dual element. Quad element designs can identify presence even with slight motion due to a higher concentration of elements. Advantages of a quad sensing element contribute to accurate detection and maintain efficient lighting control. A short focal length is all that's required even when detecting at the same distance, because the size of the NaPiOn pyroelectric element is so small. This means that high precision is maintained even though the lens is small and the sensor itself has been miniaturized.
The NaPiOn detects the temperature difference between the detection target and its surroundings, and the lowest required temperature difference to the background is 4°C /39.2°F. This means that temperature differences can be accurately detected not only in winter, when the temperature differences are large, but also in summer, when temperature differences are slight.
The entire NaPiOn circuitry is enclosed in a metal package, which means it has extremely high electromagnetic shielding capabilities. With proven resistance against power supply noise, it is also resistant against power supply superimposed noise. The most important component to be enclosed in this metal shield is the amplifier. External amplifiers will amplify both the signal and noise multiplying the effect of this noise and degrading a key parameter called signal to noise ratio. The NaPiOn sensor has a built-in amplifier inside the TO-5 metal can thus maximizing the signal to noise ratio. It has Steady-state noise of typical 155mVp-p with ambient temperature of 25 ° C and operating voltage of 5V.
This page gives typical applications for the NaPiOn. It can be used in home appliances which is useful for saving energy in air conditioners, televisions, personal computers, or ventilators and air purifiers. In the amusement machine market, it is useful for saving energy and for automated guidance in theme parks and large video games. In equipment in service markets, it is useful for automated guidance, automated announcements and energy saving in vending machines, ATMs, etc. In lighting markets, it is used for Automated on/off controls, etc. for lamps, desk lamps, indoor lights, halls, stairway lights, etc.
With an ultra-small design and dual lens colors (white and black), as well as digital and analog output with adjustable sensitivity options available. This sensor has four ways of detection: standard detection type, spot detection type, 10m detection type, and slight motion detection type. This provides greater flexibility in equipment design.
This page shows ordering information for the NaPiOn sensors and can be used to build/calculate an appropriate model number.
