5. Verifying ID is a common challenge NREGA jobs ID document ≠ ID Multiple service providers, same resident! NREGA jobs Establishing ID – poor man’s problem Birth records Address proof Money to ‘beat’ the system Poverty Premium
6. ID is the only focus of UIDAI www.uidai.gov.in NREGA jobs UID is just an instrument Guarantee to identity No guarantee to rights No guarantee to entitlements
9. UIDAI will issue unique IDs … Property of UIDAI - Highly confidential UID Unique number Random number Basic demographic data and biometrics stored centrally Central UID database Standardized identity attributes No duplicates(1:N check) Standard Know Your Resident (KYR) process Name Parents Gender DoB PoB Address
10. … and authenticate IDs online, real-time Property of UIDAI - Highly confidential Central UID database 1:1 check, no ID fraud Only YES/NO response, no details – no invasion of privacy Person can see self-details, no one else can Authentication - ‘Are you who you claim to be?’

49. UID goals can be accelerated with Partners’ Active Participation www.uidai.gov.in + 4 years + ? years August 2009 Sept 2010
In simple words, we will enroll everyone with basic identity attributes, ensure that there are no duplicates. We will not collect profiing attributes and we will not maintain transactional records.
Our audacious goal is to provide ubiquitous on-line authentication. Authentication to us is simple: Are you who you claim to be? Answer is only yes or no. there is no invasion of privacy. No information is disclosed during authentication. Mandate is simple. How do we achieve it?
Any guesses as to what this beautiful pattern is? (Pause for response)… It is a enlarged picture of an actual iris. The black centre is the pupil and the area around it with the beautiful pattern is the iris
The unique design is converted by a software into a digital pattern which has 1024 digits!
Only minimal data is collected – 4 demographic details, three biometrics DDSVP + Biometrics committee reports The end result is a 12 digit number which can be associated with only one individual. We will see how this process works.
Ram goes to withdraw cash Explain MicroATM TransferMoneytxn, with fingerprint to merchant bank NPCI authenticates the resident using UID, gets bank account using the ID mapper Executes the debit and credit transaction Sends SMS to resident and BC about debit and credit respectively BC gives resident the cash. Any Bank, Any Mobile, Any BC – no hardwiring of components or vendors – thru UID higher level of abstraction MicroATM can perform all txns - Can perform deposits and C2C transfers as well.
3.2 Demo - Positive authentication An individual comes with nothing else other than an Aadhaar number on a piece of paper . Aadhaar number is inputted and it asks for the resident’s fingerprint The data packet containing the Aadhaar and biometric is then sent to our data center to perform a check and then sends back a response (Green light flashes) – all within 5 seconds! In two easy steps , can easily prove your identity, coming from an online, central, trusted source Only yes/no came back, no other piece of information 3.3 Demo - Imposter To really show the power of authentication, let’s try to see if someone else can misuse my Aadhaar number in my absence (call someone from the audience) Maybe I will even give a Rs. 100 prize to the person who can impersonate me! Enter my Aadhaar and you can place your fingerprint to see if the transaction gets executed. (Red light flashes). Thanks, I’ll keep the Rs.100
5.3 Applications An Aadhaar-enabled bank account is useful for delivery of a number of government benefits. These benefits are spread throughout a person’s lifecycle. <Walk through the benefits slide>.
