2008: ”Connectivism and Connective Knowledge“ (CCK08) – 1st
MOOC (“cMOOC“), offered by Downes & Siemens
2011: 3 courses, launched by Stanford University, each with over
100.000 enrollments (“xMOOC“)
Feb 2012: The Horizon Report 2012 does not mention MOOCs
2012: Launch of several consortia offering MOOCs: udacity,
coursera, edX etc.
Nov 2012: The New York Times declared 2012 to be the Year of the
MOOC
Feb 2013: The Horizon Report 2013 predicts MOOCs to be a trend
with a Time-to-Adoption Horizon of one year or less

•xMOOCs: x for “extension“, instructional conception, often very high numbers of
enrollment, lecture-like
•bMOOCs: blended MOOC – combination with face-to-face meetings, e.g.
seminar at a university and open group of participants
•smOOC: small Open Online Course, less than 150 participants, seminar-like
German MOOCs in the context of universities
•cMOOCs: OPCO11, OCWL11, OPCO12, MMC13, COER13
•xMOOCs (since 2012)
