2. Editing
The trailer uses the effects of fading at the start. This is quite
a slow and relaxed transition and shows the relaxed
atmosphere at the start connotes their ordinary life.
It then uses rhythmic editing which is parallel to the music, so
as that speeds up so does the editing which adds tension to
the trailer. It builds up to the end then drops back to slow
editing again.
When the man opens the box the clip is slowed down slightly,
this is dwell on the box a little bit more. Because of the change
of speed this grabs the attention of the audience.
3. Editing
It uses spatial editing, so the trailer has continuity and it uses
a linier narrative so it’s in chronological order.
I also noticed a jump cut on the little girl. Because it is a
‘jumpy’ harsh effect it makes the audience feel more on edge.
They also use the montage effect, when the man is talking
about the power of the box it jumps to people all around the
world. This could suggest that they may be putting those
people in danger.
4. Camera angles
I thought this shot was really effective as it’s a point of view
shot, therefore we feel the as if we, the audience, are in that
position. It is also at a mid-shot, this is a good shot to use as
we are close enough to see the serious look on his face, but far
enough away to see how he’s dressed.
5. Camera angles
This shot shows the box on the doorstep, it is framed by lines from
the door and the step which adds to the harsh lines and corners of
the box. This shot zooms slowly in and stay on the screen for longer,
it is also a slightly at a high angle, looking down on the box, this
makes it look less powerful in this position.
6. Camera angle
This is a mid shot as we can only see form his waist up
however we can see clearly the setting behind him as it’s
quite a wide shot. He is framed by the window and is
stood very centrally, this could show his intimidation.
7. Camera angle
This shot is also really effective and shows her position in the
story quite well. It’s and extreme long shot and makes her
look very small and insignificant compared to the large space
she’s in. It is also a high angle and is looking down on her
making her look weak and small.
8. Mise en scene
It uses juxtaposition with Santa ringing the bell; he is
usually always seen as a friendly and happy
character so the ringing of the bell and blocking the
road makes him look intimidating and goes against
or usual ideology of him.
It also uses low key
lighting with just car
lights on him. This makes
the scene feel more
intense and dark.
9. Mise en scene
The man that is bringing the box to them has a
disfigured face. This may be suggesting that he has
flawed personality. This is something that as a an
audience we connect the disfigurement to the bad
guy, this is a common ideology.
10. Mise en scene
The setting is in a very normal street and in a normal house,
this makes it more relatable for the audience.
Something that I thought was really clever in this trailer is the
characters clothing. When the trailer start we can see that
they are in white collared jobs and present them selves well,
this can suggest the equilibrium at the start. As the trailer
goes on and the characters go through more, their clothes get
more and more dirty and ripped and old. This could also
show the mental journey that the characters are being put
through.
11. Mise en scene
They used a candle lit path for him to walk down, he’s walking
alone, this may show how the family have been pulled apart.
The candles also suggest fire and danger and also that there’s
no way out and a bit of a ‘one-way’.
He’s walking towards bars, this could suggest prison or a
death sentence that he cannot get out of. He is also being
followed by a group of people that are pressuring him to go
down that path.
12. Sound
At the start there is a back ground music of a bell
ringing. It is very quick and contrast to the slow
editing and long lengths of shots. It is contrapuntal to
what is being shown.
There is also a good use of sound effects when the
man comes to the door with the box. The door bell is
loud and has a lasting ring to it, then when the man
turns round, even before he talk, she has a deep
intake of breathe. This exaggerates on what the
character are feeling and the moment that changes
everything.
13. Sound
As the editing gets faster so does the music,
therefore this is parallel to what is being shown.
Because of these two thing being built up together it
makes that trailer feel quicker and build up more
tension the faster it gets. At the very end when the
music is very fast and there’s lots of tension it
suddenly get released and the music stops, this lets
the audience relax.
14. Sound
They use quite a lot of dialogue in this trailer, at the
beginning the man bringing the box says ‘If you push
the button two things will happen…’ he has a very
deep, old but wise voice and makes the audience feel
a little bit trusting towards him. However behind
that there is a high pitch, dangerous tone that makes
you feel a little on edge.
You also know the character position that he’s not
his job and that there hard up for money ‘we’re living
pay check too pay check’ so we know that they may
push the button for the money.
15. Sound
When they are at the ball there is boy there that
laughs, it is very loud and menacing and may suggest
the danger they are in.
