Theme or focus of image & reasons for choice
1// For this 1st
image, I used glitter on my models hair and face as prop to make the image more interesting and
also how the glitter catches the light and sparkles shows off my models facial features. The theme of this image was
for a music magazine, therefore I tried to make it like my model was a singer and was actually being featured in a
music magazine, having looked at some inspiration from other photographers who have shot well known
celebrities. This was where I got the glitter inspiration from. I chose this image to be one of my final 10 as I like the
positioning of the models face, facing downwards as it shows off her cheekbones highlighted by glitter.
2// The theme for this image, was once again, for a music magazine. The theme of this image was again, glitter. I
chose this image for one of my final 10 as I liked the models pose and how the hair created a shadow on her face
and her arm positioning, which the glitter sparkled underneath the light.
3// For this 3rd
image, the theme was again, to capture the model to look like a music magazine, to which I think I
did well. I chose this image as one of my final 10 as I liked the positioning of the models hair being up, which makes
the glitter on the tips of her hair, stand out and shine better, making the glitter the main focus. I also like how the
models eyes are shut as it makes the image appear softer rather than eye contact and her eyes being the focus.
4// For this 4th
image, the music magazine was the target and the glitter was the prop I decided to use from
inspiration from another photographer. I chose this image to be one of my final 10 as I liked how the glitter shines, so
the blue and the pinks mix together and create a purple colour underneath the light. I decided to edit two
together as they seemed like they were mirroring each other, the background image with hair down, head facing
upwards, and the front image, hair tied up facing downwards.
5// For this 5th
image, I shot my images with a music magazine in mind, using glitter on the model to make the
images more interesting. I chose this image to part of my final 10 as I liked the portrait shot style, and how she fills
the entire frame, I also liked how her face looks relaxed which makes the image softer.
6// For this 6th
image, the music magazine and glitter were the ideas that I used to my advantage to shoot my
images. I chose this 6th
image to be a part of my final 10 as I liked how one side of her face is covered by a shadow
so you cannot see half her face, I also like how the glitter enhances the models cheeks bones, giving her facial
features done depth.
7// For this 7th
image, I tried to shoot my images as suitable as possible for a music magazine using glitter as a prop
for the model to work with. I chose this image to use a part of my final ten images as the models face is facing
towards the light, but down. This allows the audience to see the right side of her face as in most images it is hidden
9. from shadows as the light was on the left side
8// For this 8th
image, I used glitter to make the images stand out as if they were for a music magazine. I chose this
eighth image to be a part of my final ten as I like models hand on her chest, as it shows more of the glitter on her
chest, as well as her positioning of her hand, it makes her hand the main focus as we go directly to her hand,
therefore we notice the glitter on her chest more.
9// For this 9th
image, I had a music magazine style similar to Clash music magazine in mind, therefore using glitter
as a prop seemed appropriate. I chose this image to be a part of my final ten as I like slanted pose from the model,
it shows off the glitter on her chest and her face, making it all sparkle underneath the light. I also like how the
models hair was down as it adds a subtle tone to the image, rather than everything being sparkling and or white
due to the background.
Techniques used
For all my images, I used the 3 X 3 grid to make the models face in the centre, or slightly off centre but making sure
the models face takes us the image to make her the main focus, as well as it being easier to see the glitter on her
face. I also used narrow depth of field to capture the models face to make sure the background, which was plain
white, wasn’t in too much of each shot, which makes the models face the main focus which then makes the glitter
more noticeable. I used a normal shutter speed to capture the images as I used the manual focus to focus on the
glitter and make sure it wasn’t blurry so you could focus on the glitter and the models face better, as well as
capturing the models face before she moved. The ISO was set so you could see the models facial features and
glitter well enough, but not with enough light let in so that the images were over exposed.
Strengths & suggested improvements
1// For this 1st
image, the strengths include the way the light hits the models face and also how it hits the glitter,
making it sparkle. Suggested improvement’s included.
2// For this 2nd
image, the strengths include the models pose and the way the light hits the models face, creating
shadows. Suggested improvements include editing the light out in the background as it ruins the illusion of the light
hitting the model.
3// For this 3rd
image, the strengths include how the light hits the ends of the models hair, making the glitter on the
ends of the hair stand out to be bright and take the main focus. Suggested improvements include the same as
image 2, editing out of the light in the background.
4// For this 4th
image, the strengths include the glitter from each image merging together and making it the main
focus. Suggested improvements include the front image of the hair up, could have been edited to be a little more
clearer so that the outlines from the image below could be a little more clearer to see.
5// For this 5th
image, the strengths include the light highlighting the glitter on the models face, which appears to
be white, pink, blue and purple. Suggested improvements include the models pose, I could of asked the model to
look into the camera to give it a little bit more depth and detail.
6// For this 6th
image, the strengths include the light highlighting the glitter which defines the models facial features,
such as the cheek bones. Suggested improvements could be that I asked the model to give a more solid face
pose, such as clenching her jaw so that her cheekbones were defined more.
7// For this 7th
image, the strengths include the glitter shining on most of the models face, making it the main focus
and the theme. Suggested improvements would include the model could have looked at the camera so that the
audience could connect with the image instantly.
8// For this 8th
image, strengths include the framing of the model, there’s more of her body in the image which
shows off the glitter on her body more. Suggested improvements could include the editing out of the lines and the
light in the background to create a smooth plain background.
9// For this 9th
image, strengths include the closer up shot of the glitter on the chest and the models pose.
Suggested improvements could be editing to make the models left eye clearer on the image.
Editing details
For all of my chosen ten final images, I edited them all the same so that they would have a running theme
throughout them. I started editing by making the brightness on each image a little bit darker for a slight vintage
effect which would highlight the glitter and make it stand out more. I then copied the edited image and pasted it
onto a new layer on top of the original edited image. With the second edited image, I made it slightly opaque so
you could see the image below it, kept it at the right opaqueness then slightly moved the second image to the left
or right depending on the models pose. With this slight movement it creates a slight ‘trippy’ or slight blurred effect
which I thought would suit the music magazine theme as it would define the model as an artist.
