2. Audience
• What have you found out about your audience?
– I have found out what type of magazines are suited to which audience. This is
clear by the brands that advertise in the magazines. For example, in the LOVE
magazine designer brands advertise such as Chanel and Tom Ford. This shows
that the magazine is aimed at high class people with a higher income as 48%
of reader are AB (high class) and the average income is £78,000. Compared to
Company magazine, that have brands such as Collection and Pantene where
61% of the audience are ABC1 (middle class).
– I also found that most of the magazines I looked at are targeted for young
women but all have a median age from around 26-34. Depending on the
company, I have found that the longer running magazines such as
Cosmopolitan have a higher median age of 34 compared to shorter running
magazines such as Company, who have a median age of 26. This age
difference is also reflected by the celebrities that are shown on the cover of
these magazines as more popular, older celebrities such as Rihanna are shown
on magazines such as Cosmopolitan compared to the younger, upcoming
celebrities such as Chloe Grace Mortez shown on the cover of Company
magazine.
– My audience must also be interested in media as all of the magazines have
famous celebrities on the cover, including an interview and photo shoot. As
this is the main selling point of the magazine.
3. Audience
• How will your project work for them?
– I will make my project work for a target audience of young women from 18 up who are middle
class by making a magazine similar to the ones I have researched like Glamour and Company. I
will use illustration and typography to make my magazine look visually appealing. This will be
continued throughout my magazine to create a collage like theme to the magazine much like
Company’s redesign which I mentioned in my research. I will use a selection of different font
types, colours and illustrations throughout the magazine to make the magazine more fun. The
colour schemes will change with each issue of the magazine and will reflect the season/theme
of the issue. This also reflects the age of my target audience.
– I would also have a well known, popular celebrity on the cover. This helps to draw interest to
my magazine. I will feature a range of different subheadings on my cover to advertise the
other articles that feature in my magazine. I will also have each heading advertising a different
genre of article in my magazine.
– I would make it diverse by adding in a range of articles from different genres such as fashion,
beauty, lifestyle, interviews and relationships. This helps to sell the magazine as it is not as
heavily fashion based compared to the LOVE magazine which is solely based on fashion and
photography. Its more lighthearted and holds the readers attention for longer due to the
change of genre of articles.
– I would also make a supporting website and social media accounts to advertise the magazine.
Also, it would help to keep the audience interested between issues and keep them up to date
with current events in fashion/beauty.
4. Market
• What makes the magazines I have researched successful is many different things
such as presentation, content, brand and price.
– The presentation of all of the magazine I have looked at are very similar. They have a picture of
a celebrity on the front cover in the centre. The title of the magazine is at the top of the
magazine. The monthly magazines have lots of text and subheading to tell the audience what
is in the magazine. The LOVE magazine, which is a bi annual magazine, has as little as possible
on the cover. This is consistent throughout the magazines as I feel that magazine is high
fashion compared to the others ( Company, Cosmopolitan, Glamour) which are more high
street fashion.
– I like use of photography in the LOVE magazine and it is something I would like to use in my
own magazine however, I don’t think that mixing styles would work very well as both
audiences are very different. Instead, I will have very simplistic street and portrait
photography in my magazine to accompany articles.
– The content of the high street magazines are all very similar with interviews, reviews and
articles about a variety of different subjects. However, the LOVE magazine is based solely on
fashion but in all aspects. Such as the designers, the events and what the clothes look like.
– It is consistent in all the magazines that the cover star has an interview. Other things like
problem pages, horoscopes and new trends/clothing are always found in the high street
fashion magazines and are a staple of the genre. I will include these sorts of things in my own
magazine.
5. Market
– The brand of the magazines are all very well known and are long established,
successful companies. Most of these magazines also run events such as
Glamour’s woman of the year and Company’s style blogger awards. This helps
to strengthen the brand and its reputation. This also helps to create positivity
towards the company which increases their reputation and in tern increases
sales.
– The price of the magazines are very competitive and often change their prices
from month to month. Special offers and prices are used to increase sales. This
is the same with free gifts. The free gifts that are given are usually beauty
products of sample size. These beauty products are usually from higher end
brands and try to reach out to a broader audience by offering their product.
These products also have a discount with them so the reader can purchase the
full size item.
– An sneak peek into the next issue is also used to advertise the magazine and
interest the reader in the next issue.
– Social media platforms are used by magazines to collect free research about
their viewers by asking their opinions about subjects, polls about what they
want to see in the magazine and various other ways of communicating with
readers. This is particularly used on Facebook as each reader can comment on
the status by the magazine but they can also like other peoples comments so
the magazine can see which responses are popular.
6. Market
– Social media apps such as Instagram can be used
to visually show the reader sneak peaks of the
magazine such as this months cover stars or share
beauty tips. Also, fans can interact with the
magazine and possibly appear in it.
7. Production
• What production considerations will you need to make?
– To make my own magazine I will need a variety of content and a team
to work on all aspects of the magazine.
– I will need information and research on current trends and what's
popular in fashion, beauty, lifestyle and celebrity culture. This
information can then be used to write articles in each different genre. I
would need a team of journalists what specialize in each of these
genres. I would also need a celebrity to interview so they could be on
the cover of my magazine as the main selling point. I would also need
a photographer to take pictures for articles throughout the magazine.
– I would need a team of graphic designers to put together the
magazine. They would need to create the layout of the cover, articles
and advertisements. Also, as I want each page to be individual, I will
need them to layout each page with different illustrations and fonts.
– I would also need advertisers to help fund the magazine and I would
need to find ones that were for middle class people such as a drug
store makeup brands like Maybelline.
8. Production
– I would need equipment such as cameras, tripods,
lights and editing programs to create my
magazine. Also, I would need a studio or location
to shoot the photos for the magazine. I would also
need an office equipped with computers and the
correct software that each team member would
require depending on their job role.
– I would also need the equipment or a printing
company to publish my magazine. A store or
supermarket would also need to distribute the
magazine.
