Fidel Castro was a Cuban revolutionary born in 1926 who led a rebellion against the corrupt government of Fulgencio Batista in the 1950s. Castro was a lawyer who joined rebel groups fighting against Batista due to the poor treatment of Cubans and decided to organize his own rebellion. By 1959, Castro's rebel group had grown strong enough that they were able to overthrow Batista's government, after which the US initially tried to work with Castro as the new leader of Cuba.
