Sexual harassment is defined as intimidation, bullying or coercion
of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of
rewards in exchange for sexual favors. This workshop will explore
various types of sexual harassment and offer suggestions on how
to handle it in the work setting. Sexual harassment violates Title
VII ofthe Civil RightsAct of 1964. Under both state and federal law,
harassment of an employee on the basis of any of the protected
characteristics, i.e., race, sex, religion, etc., is an unlawful
discriminatory employment practice because it interferes with
the terms and conditions of employment. While less overt than
in previous years, this form of discrimination continues in our
communities and may effect diverse populations disparately.
Neal Semel is the Education Coordinator/Equal Opportunity
for the City of Columbus Community Relations Commission. For
over 20 years, Neal has worked with public and private sector
groups educating them about Diversity, Cultural Awareness,
Alternative Dispute Resolution and Workforce Development.
Neal is also a consultant and has worked extensively with groups
around issues of Diversity, particularly with first responders and
educators. Previously, Neal has worked as a drummer, a chef and
in child protection.
Inspired by The Huffington Post’s new Third Metric initiative that

and power, this session will feature insights and advice from a
diverse group of leaders who have adopted this approach to their
careers and lives. They will discuss strategies for:
• Tying in exercise and good nutrition while on the go.
• Preventing burnout.
• Discerning when to say “yes” or “no.”
• Time management.
•	Giving back.

you find yourself wondering where did the time go? Have you accomplished what
you wanted to or do you feel there is more still to do? This roundtable focuses on
discussing “why” maintaining work-life balance is not an option; identifying “what
matters,” and discovering “how to” prevent the clock from running out before you
accomplish your goals.
Dr. Patricia Larkins Hicks Founder and President, The Outcomes Management
Group, Ltd. (OMG), has thirty years of experience in health care, organizational

The 60 minute presentation will be interactive, entertaining and
practical about the pitfalls to avoid and goals to be reached when
exercising leadership responsibilities as Hispanics in a changing
workplace and community.

Puerto Rican descent. Dr. Betances worked for the US Office
of Education. From there he taught Sociology for 25 years in at
Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Dr. Betances is a
diversity consultant who has worked and lectured as a consultant
throughout the USA, all the Territories and in many countries such
as Mexico, Venezuela, England, Korea and Japan.
What exactly is cultural competence and how can we manage
it when we live and work with multiple cultures every day? This
presentation will look at how to attain the basics of this important
and life-enriching skill for both business and social purposes.
Dr.TaraL. Narcross is the supervisor ofthe Language Institute
at Columbus State Community College. In that capacity, she
coordinates delivery of both general and customized non-credit
language courses to the community, service organizations, and
businesses. Language Institute programming includes general
and contextual Basic English as a Second Language (ESL), as well
as basic Spanish, French and other languages.
How does one become a competent interpreter? It is a common misconception
to think that if one is bilingual one can automatically become an interpreter or a
translator. However, it is not that easy. Interpreters have to provide accurate and
complete interpretations. This is more than exchanging words from one language
to another. Interpreters (and translators) must have a strong command of the target
and source languages and must understand the context of how culture, idioms
and a person’s register affect the delivery or intent of the speaker. Included in this
presentation will be the distinction between interpreters and translators, definitions
of common modes of interpretations, list of professional organizations, tools for
research, types of interpreters and translators, employment opportunities and
outlook as well as the need for continuing education.
Alvaro DeCola is an attorney practicing Immigration and Criminal Defense in the
State of Ohio. Alvaro is, also, a Spanish Language Court Interpreter certified by the
US Courts, the State of CA and the State of OH, with over 17 years of experience in
different areas of the law.

How does one become a competent interpreter? It is a common misconception to think that if one is bilingual one can automatically become an interpreter or a translator. However, it is not that easy. Interpreters have to provide accurate and complete interpretations. This is more than exchanging words from one language to another. Interpreters (and translators) must have a strong command of the target and source languages and must understand the context of how culture, idioms and a person’s register affect the delivery or intent of the speaker. Included in this presentation will be the distinction between interpreters and translators, definitions of common modes of interpretations, list of professional organizations, tools for research, types of interpreters and translators, employment opportunities and outlook as well as the need for continuing education.
