Summary: Cloud computing emerged, a decade or so ago, from underused computing and storage ressources in Internet players mega data centres that were thought to be provided "as a service". As a result of this inception, Cloud is often considered as a synonym for massive data center, which somehow fuels a very centralised vision of (cloud) computing and storage provision. However, we might be at a time in which the pendulum begins to swing back. Indeed, several initiatives are emerging around a vision of more geographically distributed clouds where computing and storage resources are made available at the edge of the network, close to users, in complement or replacement of massive remote data centres. This presentation discusses, through some examples, the evolution of cloud architectures towards more distribution, the signs and stakes of these mutations.

Is there such a thing as a private cloud? Cloudscaling's Troy Angrignon participated in a panel on private cloud at Citrix Synergy 2011 in San Francisco on May 26, 2011. The conclusions: - All three of the panelists agreed that there is such a thing as private cloud. - Carpathia specializes in building high complexity custom private clouds. - There are two types of clouds: legacy clouds for highly regulated, complex client/server type IT stacks and webscale clouds for less regulated, web/mobile, greenfield and simpler stacks that need to scale. - Panel discussed how those two models (legacy cloud and webscale cloud) could be found inside (private) or outside (public). - Key is to realize that applications should always be moved to the platform that is appropriate for the application, use case, regulatory requirement, elasticity requirement.

For organizations that depend critically on their network to provide services to both internal and external customers, understanding why quality of service issues occur is critical. An emerging tool in Network Performance Management and Diagnostics (NPMD) is network recording and search, which allows network operations (NetOps) staff to identify issues in service and application delivery. Finding the right data (whether packets, netflows, or otherwise) to understand why your application is underperforming is often like finding a needle in a haystack. In most cases, you have to find exactly the right set of packets to understand why you have a service performance issue or a service failure. As organizations move from 1Gb Ethernet to 10Gb Ethernet to 40/100Gb Ethernet (1GbE, 10GbE, 40/100GbE), the “amount of hay” is increasing by orders of magnitude. However, most network recording and search devices on the market today cannot keep up with data rates beyond a few gigabits per second, and have to “sample” the network traffic. In this context, selecting the right network recording and search device means the difference between understanding and resolving your problem quickly, and spending days or weeks trying to randomly capture the right packets.
