The document describes Enabled by Design, a community created by Denise to raise awareness about assistive technology (AT) design. It discusses her experience with multiple sclerosis and using AT, and her frustration with the clinical appearance of AT devices. She created Enabled by Design as an online community to share experiences and views on improving AT functionality and aesthetics through modern design. The goal is to challenge the one-size-fits-all approach to AT and encourage personalization of support to meet individuals' unique needs.

3. Hello!
My name’s Denise…
• Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS)
diagnosed in 2003
• MS is a neurological condition that’s
unpredictable, variable and different in each
case
• My symptoms include: fatigue, weakness,
numbness, visual disturbance, poor balance
and vertigo
• Use a wide range of assistive technology
(AT) to make day-to-day
tasks more manageable

5. Ikea
The battle of the bland…
• Ugly, clinical looking AT = DEPRESSING
• Grateful for fact helped me to keep independence
• Frustrated as home looked more and more like a
hospital
• Surely this CAN’T be the way it has to be…
• Looked for alternative mainstream products that did
same job
• Very aware of fact people benefit from learning, as
well as support of others with similar experiences

6. Twitter
Doing my little bit…
• From experiences and learning, decided to set up
online community
• Platform to share experiences and views on AT
• Raising awareness of need to improve both
functionality and aesthetics
• Result was Enabled by Design:
A community of people passionate about those well designed products that make
day-to-day tasks that little bit easier. By sharing their loves, hates and ideas, Enabled
by Design-ers challenge the one-size-fits-all approach to assistive equipment through
the use of clever modern design.

Health
What is personalisation?
“Personalisation, including a strategic shift towards early intervention and
prevention, will be the cornerstone of public services. This means that every
person who receives support, whether provided by statutory services or funded
by themselves, will have choice and control over the shape of that support in all
care settings”.

9. Putting
People
First
What does personalisation
mean to me?
• Being respected as an individual
• Being supported to live independently
• Support tailored to my needs and desires
• Getting involved, having a say, making
decisions for myself
• Having more options available to me
• Feeling more in control of my life
• No longer feeling frustrated, helpless and not involved
• Greater confidence and sense of self-worth and well-being

10. What are the benefits and how do we make it
happen?
• Tailor made support to meet the needs of individuals not the masses
• Working with people who need support and enabling them to make the best
possible decisions for themselves
• Proactive approach to help prevent falls and accidents and in turn lower the risk
of hospital admissions
• OTs definitely play key role in personalisation agenda, as change agents,
educators and facilitators
• But you’re not alone
• Make use of networks and communities to share best practice, knowledge,
learning, experiences, views and ideas

11. Enabled by Design is one of these
communities and we’d love to invite OTs
to join our site and get involved in the
conversation…
