Best Rivers in Costa Rica for White-Water Rafting and Kayaking.
1. Top 5 Rivers in Costa Rica
for Rafting and Kayaking
2. Lower Pacuare
• The Lower Section (Rio
Pacuare)- This is the section of
class III and IV whitewater that
the Pacuare River is most
famous for. Running
approximately 23 miles (and
dropping approximately 1200
feet) from Finca La Cruz to the
town of Siquirres. This section of
the Pacuare River can be done in
a single day trip or as long as a
three day trip. The highlights of
this section include the
whitewater rapids and the
waterfalls that flow into the
river in the Huacas River Gorge.
The rapids include Upper and
Lower Huacas (class IV), Double
Drop (class III), Cimarones (class
IV) as well as multiple others.
3. Upper Pacuare
• This more
technical section
consists of
approximately
ten miles of
whitewater
including multiple
class IV and V
rapids as well as
waterfalls. The
take-out for this
section is Finca La
Cruz. This section
is mostly run
using creek boat
whitewater
kayaks.
4. Upper Sarapiqui
• The current,
swollen with rain
water, gushes
over the class III
and IV rapids.
Water crashes
against boulders
and launches
itself over hurdles
of unseen stones
creating great
rolling waves.
Compared with
the fury of the
Sarapiqui River,
the rafts seem a
humble match.
But with the help
of a team and
expert guides,
you'll be
navigating the
rapids with ease.
5. Upper Naranjo
• This is the finest
whitewater you
will find in the area
from January
though April when
the water level is
at its navigable
best. The starting
point on the
“Chorro” is located
45 minutes east of
Manuel Antonio.
Once you pass
through a couple
of local towns and
wind your way into
the river valley, the
action begins. This
section has
sweeping turns
around and 3 to 4
foot drops which
classify it as lll, IV
and IV+. The trip
finishes after
passing though a
mini-canyon with
high rock walls..
6. Upper Toro
• The mix of class
III and class IV
whitewater at the
top is sure to get
your heart going
as you make your
way out from the
canyon. If you
run this river, it
would be a
shame to not to
stop by the
Arenal Volcano
either the day
before or the day
after your rafting
adventure.
