                                ARE BLONDES REALLY DUMB?
                          __________________________________________




     After reading a series of jokes about blonde girls at
     http://www.comedy-
     zone.net/jokes/laugh/blondes/index.htm ,Van askes Chris.
     Van:        Oh dear! These blondes are stupid in these
                 stories! How come people think of blonde girls
                 that way, Chris?
     Chris:      Not really all of them. Look at the article I cut from
                 Weekly World News on October 15, 1996 in my
                 scrapbook!




     “See? With this piece of scientific evidence, noone can say that blondes are dumb
     anymore!” Chris proudly concludes.
     As a friend, what would you like to say to Van and/or Chris?

finding three websites with plenty of information about the topic. However, she does not know
which should be the most proper source of information for her presentation. Can you help?

At the canteen, Rose orders some bean sprouts for her an Van. Upon looking at the dish, Van
cringes: “Keep it away from me!” Rose is slightly offended until Van sends her a webpage:

Vietnamese, it finally dawns on Rose what is really going on. Do you know?

6. Van, Chris and Rose all team up for a presentation on the issues of traffic in Vietnam. After a
    few days collecting information, they meet again and have a quick discussion:

        Van:     Let me see … for the next part, we intended to discover the reasons for the
                 traffic situations in Vietnam. I hope you guys do not find it too hard to
                 understand websites in Vietnamese.
        Chris:   Actually I do. That’s why I’ve just got a very short commentary from
                 http://www.hanoimoi.com.vn/vn/41/129222/ From this, I can see that the
                 increase in traffic accidents in Vietnam is due to people’s poor knowledge of
                 traffic rules.
        Van:     (Taking notes) Uh huh? Interesting. What about you, Rose?
        Rose:    Same          here.      Just        a      very     short       article    from

                 the railways running across several streets, which is really dangerous. I can say
                 that explains for the increasing number of train accidents in Vietnam.
        Van:     (Taking notes) Well, so far so … bad (laugh) But the good news is things are
                 looking up, aren’t they? I mean we have take actions, like compulsory helmet
                 wearing for motorcyclists, which accounts for the number of a remarkable
                 reduction in the number of traffic accidents. Here is the evidence … (sharing the

        Rose:    Great. That’s it! Let’s work on the presentation now.
        Chris:   Just a sec, Rose. To be on the safe side, I think we may need time to look at our
                 arguments in this part again.
        Rose:    Come on, Chris. Isn’t it crystal clear now (showing Van’s notes below)?

                 So we’ve come up with all the concrete conclusions to explain for these
                 problems and improvements, many of which are obvious and claimed
                 repetitively by the mass media like people’s ignorance of the traffic rules. Why
                 bother checking them again?

      They both now turn to Van for a decision. If you were her, who would you agree with,
      Rose or Chris? Why?
7. Van found Rose sitting at the school canteen with her MP3 and earphones on.
      Van: (tapping Rose’s back) Hi, Rose. How’s the song?
      Rose: (taking off the earphones) Hi, Van. Oh you must hear this song by Lazyboys. The
             song is full of great facts about the world that will sure take you aback! Look at
             the         lyrics       (Giving       a        printed         webpage        at:

             /facts_of_life_lyrics_126662.html). Look! “5% of the population is gay”.
      Van: I know.
      Rose: You know?
      Van: Yeah, I read from an article somewhere that Alfred Kinsey’s “Sexual Behavior in
             the Human Male” (1948) announced that 10% of the male population is gay. The
             2000 U.S. Census Bureau even found that homosexual couples constitute less
             than 1% of American households. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
             estimates three to eight percent of both sexes, and …
      Rose: (interrupt) …and Wow! I’m bemused by what you know! Don’t tell me that you
             are …
      Van: (blushing) Sorry to disappoint you but no. Just because you’ve asked someone
             who made a presentation on Gay Marriage last week (laugh)
      Rose: (laugh) Ok, but seriously I’m confused. Which source of data is more reliable? It
             must be the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in my opinion. They must know
             well enough to come up with that figure.
      Van: Well, I think …
      How far do you agree with Rose and what do you think Van is going to say?
