5. Dissertation Fellowships

Research Grants
◦ Funds for specific research needs (supplies, participant
compensation, equipment) requested through a detailed
budget.
These awards are usually for students in the exploratory and active
research phases of a project.

Once you have advanced to candidacy, you may become eligible for more funding opportunities. Advancing to candidacy means you have completed your department’s coursework requirements, examination requirements and teaching requirements and that you are ready to research, write and complete your dissertation. This status is usually also referred to as ABD status, an acronym meaning All But Dissertation.

Some examples of UC wide fellowships include the Center for U.S. Mexican Studies (USMEX) visitng fellows program, the predissertation and dissertation fellowship program sponsored by the Institute of European Studies, the Mildred E. Mathias Graduate student resear ch grants sponsored by the Natural Reserve System, and the Advanced Graduate Research Fellowships sponsored by the Pacific Rim Research Program.

The SOURCE is a funding resource for graduate students maintained by the UCSB graduate division. You can view or search listings online or subscribe to a discipline-specific listserv. The lists are divided into the categories of Humanites and Fine Arts; Science, Engineering and Math, and Social sciences and Education. Email list feeds arrive every two weeks. GRAPES: The Grapes database, or Graduate and Postdoctoral Extramural Support catalogues extramural funding opportunities of interest to prospective and current graduate students, students working on a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation, and postdoctoral scholars. It contains information on over 500 privately and publicly funded awards, fellowships and internships. Advances search options allow users to refine teir search by field, academic level, award type, award amount and other criteria. GRAPES is maintained by the UCLA graduate Outreach, Diversity and Fellowshops office. PIVOT - All members of the UCSB community have free access to Pivot, a funding search databaseif they are onnected to the UCSB network or if they sign up for an account with a ucsb.edu email address. Pivot offers a searchable database of 250000 records representing over 400,000 individual funding opportunities from numberous sponsors across all disciplines. Using Pivot, you can create accounts, lists, and sign up for personalizes email funding alerts on previously saved searches.
