 A measure of the amount of matter or
substance in a body
 Cannot be changed by its location,
shape or speed
 SI unit is kilogram (kg)

3. Weight
 The amount of gravitational force acting
on a body
 Has direction
 SI unit is newton (N)

4. Gravitational Field
 The region surrounding the Earth where
gravity is experienced

5. Gravitational Field Strength
 Defined as the gravitational force acting
per unit mass on an object
 Strength on earth- 10 N kg^-1
 Strength on the moon- 1.6 N kg^-1

6. Fun fact
A person who’s weight is 70kg on Earth
would weigh 11.2kg on the moon. This is
because the gravitational pull of the moon
is much less than that of the Earth’s.

7. Inertia
 Refers to the reluctance of the object to
change its state of rest or motion
 Depends on the mass of the object
 An object with more mass has greater
inertia
 The larger the mass of an object, the
harder it is for it to start moving, slow
down, move faster or change direction

8. Density
 Density= mass divided by volume
 Defined as the mass per unit volume of an
object
 SI unit is kilogram per cubic metre(kg m^-3)

9. Density
 Substances which float on water have a
lower density than water
 Substances which sink in water are more
dense than water and have a higher
density
