John Dalton6 Sep. 1766 – 27 Jul. 1844  was an Englishchemist, meteorologist and physicist. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory, and his research into colour blindness (sometimes referred to as Daltonism, in his honour).

  3. 1994年,当英国神经科医生奥利弗·萨克斯(Oliver Sacks)、美国眼科专家罗伯特·华瑟曼(Robert Wasserman)和挪威生理学家克努特·诺德比(Knut Nordby)踏上这个小岛的时候,孩子们几乎倾巢出动来欢迎这些长相奇特的外乡人。而他们中的不少人冲出房间时,把黑色的衣服罩在头上,抵挡强烈的光 线。来自寒冷挪威的克努特,自己也是一个全色盲患者。当他带着双层的墨镜,站在热带小岛的白沙滩上,看到如此多头顶黑衣的孩子跑向自己,立刻有了一种奇妙 的认同感和归属感。究竟为什么这个小岛上的全色盲发病率如此之高呢?这要归咎于两百多年前年的一场灾难–1775年,飓风袭击了这个小岛,岛上上千名岛民死亡了 90%。因为飓风毁坏了植被,活下来的居民也陷入了饥荒。最后,整个小岛只有二十个人存活了下来。而这二十个人里,正有一个人携带了全色盲的基因,而他, 正是这个小岛的国王。通常,全色盲是一种隐形遗传疾病。这就意味着,一个人必须同时从父母双方继承两条全色盲基因,他才会成为全色盲——如果仅继承了一条,而另一条是正 常非色盲基因的话,他将于普通人无异。由于全色盲基因本身就很罕见,再加上它隐性遗传的特点,全色盲在人群里非常稀少。可是这场灭顶之灾仿佛浓缩橙汁一 样,把小岛居民里的全色盲基因比例大大提高了。再加上人口数量锐减,近亲繁殖在所难免,从灾后第四代居民开始,全色盲的问题就凸现出来–今天,岛上有近 10%的人是全色盲,而近1/3的人是全色盲基因的携带者。
