Özet:
Bu çalışmada bilgi görselleştirmesinde sıkça rastlanan bir yaklaşımı, simge (ikon) bazlı
görselleştirmeyi esas alarak geliştirilen bir görselleştirme yaklaşımı ve bunun bir
gerçek veri üzerine uygulaması bulunabilir. “Boyutlandırılabilir simgeler” adını
verdiğimiz bu yaklaşım özellikle kategorik bir grup alan içeren ve sayısal bir ya da daha
çok alan içeren veriler için uygulanabilmektir. Bu yaklaşımda kategorik değişkenin
farklı değerlerinin her biri bir kutu olarak gösterilmekte, ve her bir kutunun içi o
değeri taşıyan elemanları simgeleyen renkli kare simgelerle doldurulmaktadır. Kare
simgelerin rengi sayısal bir değişkenin değerini göstermektedir. Bu görselleştirmedeki
amaçlar kullanıcıya rahatça algılayabileceği grafikler sunmak ve ekran yüzeyinin en
etkin şekilde kullanımını sağlamaktır. Bahsedilen etkin kullanım hedef fonksiyonu ve
kısıtları olan bir optimizasyon problemi olarak ifade edilebilmektedir. Bu problem iki
temel değişkenin değerleri değiştirilerek ve en iyi çözüm saklanarak kolayca
çözülebilmektedir.

Boyutlandırılabilir simgeler yaklaşımı 2004 Öğrenci Seçme Sınavı (ÖSS)’de iki farklı
puan türüne göre ilk 5000’de yer alan 5965 öğrencinin bilgilerini içeren bir veriyi
görselleştirmede kullanılmıştır. Bu verilerin görsel incelenmesi üniversiteler ve liseler
arasında kıyaslama yapmaya ve liselerle ilişkilerin etkin bir şekilde yönetilmesine
imkan tanımaktadır.
