A. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS
LEVEL: UPPER-INTERMEDIATE
Students between the ages of 19-25.A mixed group of men and women. The class takes place
from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Mondays.
B. OBJECTIVES
1. To use the present perfect and the present perfect continuous in real context
2. To use gerunds as the objects of prepositions
3. To create hypothetical situation using mixed conditionals
C. CONTENTS
OBJECTIVE 1: To use the present perfect and the present perfect continuous in real
context. (30 minutes)
a) Context: questions about traveling, discussion.
Have you traveled abroad?
How long have you stayed in that place?
How did you feel during that time?
What has been the strangest thing that you have faced there?
b) Grammar: explain to the class the present perfect and the present perfect continuous
c) Activity: complete the information using the present perfect or the present perfect
continuous according to the situation. Fill the blanks.
1. Within two years, I _________(open) my own business
2. By this time next year, I _______(study) English for more than half my life
3. By the end of the next year, I ________ (learn) another foreign language
4. In a year’s time, I _______(live) in this city for 10 years
5. In five years’ time, I______ (settle) down with the person of my dreams
OBJECTIVE 2: To use gerunds as the objects of prepositions (35 minutes)
a) Context: Moving abroad
Would you like to move abroad? Where?
What is the main reason for you to move abroad?
b) Grammar: explain to the class the use of gerunds as the objects of prepositions. (10
minutes)
2. c) Activity 1:write sentences about what you can feel if you move abroad using the
following expressions:
1. Be afraid of
2. Be interested in
3. Insist on
4. Be excited about
Activity 2: choose a piece of paper and say if the information you have is the same or
different in the USA and our country. Explain why.
1. Lunch is usually a fairly light meal that doesn’t last long
2. Many people eat dinner early in the evening, around 6:00 pm
3. People are usually punctual for appointments. In fact, most people arrive slightly
early.
4. Both men and women shake hands when introduced
5. It’s common to ask people you meet what kind of work they do
6. It’s not uncommon for couples to display affection in public
7. When invited to someone’s home, you’re not necessarily expected to bring a gift.
Even so, something small, such as flowers or dessert is always appreciated.
8. People generally talk quite a bit while they’re eating dinner.
OBJECTIVE 3: To create hypothetical situation using mixed conditionals (35 minutes)
a) Grammar: explain how to create hypothetical situations using mixed conditionals
b) Activity 1: look at the pictures and create some situations about each picture. What
you have done in each situation?
Activity 2: Rewrite this information in as conditional sentences.
1. Mark and Steve didn’t make a hotel reservation, so they’re spending the night in
the train station
2. I forgot to bring my camera with me to Thailand, so I can’t take any pictures of the
beautiful temples.
3. Elizabeth didn’t pack a bathing suit, so she’s spending the first day of her vacation
at the beach shopping for one.
4. My father doesn’t’ like to fly, so he didn’t visit me when I lived overseas.
Activity 3: Read the article and ask:
1. What do you think are the most common communication problems that we can
have in a foreign country?
2. What are the suggestions that the author gives us?
3. What other suggestions can you give for avoiding this kind of difficulties?
