4. POET Biorefining – Chancellor
Waste powered ethanol production
Several hundred tons of waste wood
chips are fed into the solid waste fuel
boiler daily.
Methane gas from the Sioux Falls Regional
Landfill is piped into the solid waste fuel
boiler.
• These two alternative energy sources displace about
half of the plant’s natural gas use.
• Eventually it could replace 90% of the plant’s total
energy needs.

5. • POET began research on cellulosic
ethanol in 2001
CELLULOSIC • Started producing cellulosic ethanol at
ETHANOL pilot scale in 2008
• Initial feedstock: corn cobs, leaves and
husks
• Commercial plant under construction
