This Slidecast is one of a series showcasing the ways in which teachers at the International School of Manila have adapted their teaching to better facilitate sustainability education
In the Modern language department we looked at how to use the compass as a tool. I used it with my g12 HL to introduce the health topic. Each group researched a particular aspect of health issues, analyzed it, making connection with nature, well being, society and economy and then presented their work to the classWith my g11 and 12 SL and HL I introduced the compass as a tool to describe images.
I had to change some aspects of my teaching and move away, to a certain extent, from the exam techniques, which recommend answering a series of questions when describing a picture, or make a plan to prepare for an essay or a presentationThe compass allows students and myself to think outside the box
The students used to think only of certain aspects, but now they can look at the broader picture and realize how the world is interconnected.By researching and explaining they can develop their ideas, discover, learn and retain new vocabulary and structures, which they see in context.
It was very successful and the students showed more enthusiasm and realized how it improved their critical thinking. More enjoyment for me too as I saw a real progress, a new perspective is always refreshing! But we have to keep in mind that it requires perhaps more preparation and planning
I would recommend to try step by step process, introduce it little by little in some classes, with some topics, see how it goes.I have other ideas which I will try: - Role play situations for g9 (environment), g11 (tourism) and g12 (racism)- students acting as various stakeholders in a particular situationUsing the compass for evaluating our work with Berdesaco and perhaps changing the planning of it. Trying to improve the wellbeing of the ladies who work for Berdesaco or the teachers involved in the school linked to Berdesaco. It is also useful to look at what other teachers do and try to adapt it for you own lessons.
