La piccola attività londinese trattava in origine antichità e conchiglie orientali. Nel 1897 Samuel costituì The Shell Transport and Trading Company. Il primo logo nel 1901 era la conchiglia di un mitilo. Nel 1904 la conchiglia di una cappasanta ha dato un elemento visivo al nome e al marchio aziendale.
