5. Words from our players
I believe MBU is a great project that is worth further
investment. As young student I appreciate the opportunity
to bond with my peers in a constructive environment that
teaches teamwork, problem solving and hard work through
football. The older members also act as mentors for the
younger players which is beneficial for both parties. Many
of our members come from disadvantaged families and
so can only contribute the minimum that we ask toward
maintaining the club.
I am also encouraged that the organizers of MBU want
to develop this club beyond the football pitch. I know we
would like to be able to organize community service activi-
ties for the members to teach the values of being a part of
and serving the community, but a major obstacle so far has
been the lack of funds. It would be great to develop the
club to become a sustainable community project’.
Tokuwa Kanno, 24 years old
This is my second year at MBU, and we are a relatively new club in
this league.Yes it has been pretty tough to get started and progress,
but now we have started to gel and our experiences, as a team will
increase as we continue to play good football. We have a great friend-
ship between all the players, and have gotten to know each other
quite well. I feel we have established a really excellent community
between us, and we can progress a lot further with correct funding
for the team. I believe we are the youngest squad in the league, and
I sense that it’s really good for the lads to enjoy the sport, and the
encouragement of good sportsmanship that there is throughout our
team. I believe that as we play together for longer periods of time we
can achieve a really good team and community between us all.
Alex Fortune, 17 years old
MBU have been together for nearly two years now and i have had
the pleasure of joining this year and ‘mbu’ for me has brought fun and
enjoyment into my football.
I play for two teams and even though I enjoy playing for my other
team, MBU has a variety in age, ability and nationality. I enjoy it very
much when we play and come together as a team. Recently we are on
a winning streak and the joy from all the team members you can see
in their faces when we win is the reason why i love playing for ‘MBU
every week.

6. Mind Body United FC has had a great start in getting people together to
enjoy and play the sport of football. Being able to bring together brothers
aging from 16-26+ to spend time together focused on a goal is a great ac-
complishment and Ive personally enjoyed it very much. We practice and play
games weekly and its a been a good season so far, we still have a lot to we
want to accomplish but we’re getting there! One of the things Ive enjoyed the
most is the friendly atmosphere that has been building itself up, one where a
new player can come and be welcomed into the team and encouraged to play.
MBU is a great asset to helping our community come closer and I feel that it
has a lot of potential to continue being more than just a normal football club.”
Kenneth Read, 21 years old
MBU helps me in many ways, the most obvious one is improving my football
as a whole and learning to play as a team. I’ve learnt a lot like you can never
give otherwise your team will never win.
The reason I’m in the MBU team is because i just want to play football and i
want to enjoy it and i think MBU players are those who will help me grow as
a player and a perso. I enjoy playing with our team a lot!
Sammy Davies, 16 years old
At first before MBU was founded I was playing for another team, who
were competing in the Ryman Youth league at the time. Although on
the surface the club was a team that were performing well throughout
the first team down to the academy but internally for a lot of players it
was a rough ride. The daily training was not enjoyable, matchday always
had an eerie feeling - I didn’t want to waste the long coach journey just
to sit on the bench the whole game in the rain and many players did ot
feel like we had great teamwork. Eventually a number of players left in
the first season including me.
My new club was MBU, although they didnt play in a great league & was
not an established club, it was the club for me. The manager was a great
support. The players were supportive and friendly, although we range
across multiple cultures, we got on better than bread and butter. The
weekly losses were saddening but we gained a lot from them and grew
as a team - it helped me feel comfortable and my confidence was at
its fullest. I am now in brazil playing for Clube Atlético Sorocaba & am
working hard to fulfill my dream of being a professional football player.
