Top 10 Vacation Spots in Argentina
Argentina, being the world’s eighth largest country with only a 40 million population has 40% of its people residing in
its capital city, Buenos Aires. With the famous plains of Pampas, long highways flanked by incredible scenery,
ranches and wide open roads, its natural beauty and charm, fashionable shopping options, exquisite cuisine, and the
Argentinean nightlife, this Latin American country is more European than Europe itself. But being more affordable
than Europe, the cost of living is much cheaper for anyone who wants to visit on a holiday or think of settling here.
The country was colonized by the Spanish in 1516 until it gained independence in 1816. Europeans from Italy and
Spain continued to flow in. This explains the heavy Spanish influence on the language, cuisine, and culture of the
Argentinean people.
Known to have some of the best beef in the world, you can assure yourself of delicious steaks galore and enough
good wine to flow with the laughter and the thrill of being here. Situated in the southern part of South America,
Argentina shares its borders with Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. While Buenos Aires has a temperate climate,
Patagonia enjoys cool summers and very cold winters.
In 2011, Argentina was the most visited country in the South American continent. It is the tango capital of the world
with daily tango shows and antique fairs being organized at Plaza Dorrego. It is also the birthplace of the world
famous Argentine Marxist revolutionary, Ernesto Guevara, commonly known as ‘Che.’ Argentines are passionate
about soccer and witnessing a live match here, especially for soccer fans, is a must-do on your itinerary.

Holiday in Argentina

Getting around
Transport
Getting around Argentina has many options. There are buses and trains (with a limited network). You could choose to
rent a car which may be a bit more expensive. Bus travel is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient if you are looking
at availing public transport. The spoken language is primarily Spanish in a local dialect but tourist places have people
speaking Basic English to help you get by.
Food and Drink
While visiting Argentina, you may choose to make Buenos Aires your base or choose other regions like Salta and
Mendonza which are the wine growing regions. They are touristy as well, without the blare of a typical city life that
Buenos Aires offers. Try the famous Yerba mate, a traditional herbal drink that can give you a better kick than coffee!
Restaurants serve a wide selection and preparation of meats, pastries and bakes.
If you are adventurous enough, you could try their assortment of entrails (achuras). The barbeques (parrillada) are a
must for meat lovers and blend well with the local wine and salads to help you experience Argentinean cuisine.
Safety
Tourists must watch out for rash traffic on all roads. Taxis parked near tourist attractions tend to charge more. Fix the
price before getting in. Avoid public demonstrations which are common in Buenos Aires. Carrying around a copy of
your ID/Passport is safer than carrying originals.

1. BUENOS AIRES
Buenos Aires literally means ‘fair winds’ or good air. This capital city of Argentina offers a very urban lifestyle to its
inhabitants who call themselves ‘portenos’ or port people. The main tourist attractions lie in its neighborhoods which
are called ‘barrios.’ The city has as many as 48 districts or barrios, offering a platter full of activities and interests to
choose from.
La Boca which was once the abode for Italian dock workers boasts of being one of the city’s most colorful barrios
today. The neighborhood has museums, restaurants and brightly colored houses including metal houses that
highlight paintings and scenes from the urban life here. The Caminito Street for pedestrians offers a mélange of art
and crafts. Tango dancers can be seen practicing on the streets. The history of Buenos Aires can be breathed in by
walking along the quaint cobbled lanes of San Telmo with colonial-style houses, wrought iron lanterns and most
surprisingly an exciting underground nightlife.

When To Visit Argentina

You could grab some great barbeques and grills at Almagro, decide to shop at the boutiques and bookstores in
Palermo, indulge yourself to the expensive tastes of Recoleta with its French style buildings and luxurious
restaurants, and visit the Cementerio de la Recoleta where the beloved Argentinean First Lady, Eva Peron and other
members of aristocratic families are buried in ornate tombs. Florida and Lavelle Streets in MicroCentro are some of
the pedestrian streets where you can concentrate on shopping rather than being run over by traffic!
Buenos Aires also has gaucho parties where you get to meet real cowboys riding their horses, eat Gaucho food and
dance like they used to. Kids and adults would enjoy stepping into the shoes of a cowboy even if it doesn’t last
forever.
Attend tango performances in the tango houses in Boedo or watch it best performed in the Milongas (a place and
form of tango performance), or just take a quiet stroll in Belgrano, browsing through shops and architectural relics,
when you have nothing to do and all the time to do it in! Puerto Madero is an antique port town with interesting sights
and sounds. Most districts have weekly markets and fairs you can visit.
The fashion, food, culture, and creative energy of these port people knit them together and they showcase it in the
most attractive ways, drawing thousands of tourists here every year.
