If you’ve spent any time administering SharePoint 2010, you’ve hopefully gotten at least an introduction to PowerShell and made use of the new cmdlets available to manage your farm. But here’s the thing, if all you’re using are those cmdlets you’re just scratching the surface of what can be accomplished with PowerShell and SharePoint 2010. For quite some time now the SharePoint Object Model has been the playground of developers, but there’s a dirty little secret they don’t want you to know: admins can use it too, thanks to PowerShell. Sure, Get-SPSite and Get-SPWeb offer a lot of functionality, but the Object Model can allow an administrator to go a lot deeper into managing the content of the sites in their environments. It’s also important to understand the ins and outs of the OM, how it fits into the overall SharePoint picture, and how it can bite you in the rear end if you’re not careful with it. This session will introduce administrators to some of the possibilities offered by the Object Model, the various ways that administrators can discover its capabilities, and the challenges and gotchas to keep an eye out for when working with it.
