Why we exist
the problem
Euthanasia, (shelter killing of unwanted animals) is believed to be the leading cause of death for dogs and cats in the United States
It is widely accepted that between 3.7 million to 4.9 million healthy companion animals are destroyed annually in the US
The cost of this method of companion animal “population control” is estimated to be around $500 million annually in the United States
71% of cats entering traditional animal shelters are “euthanized” … that number jumps to nearly 100% for feral cats
Over 65% of cats who end up in shelters are stray, feral, ABUSED, or abandoned
Only 2% of lost cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners
It is estimated that as many as 37,000 and 45,000 domestic cats are destroyed in Minnesota shelters every year…. A large portion of them are feral cats, who do not belong in shelters
In Minnesota terms, this is equivalent to the loss of the human population of Richfield, Saint Louis Park, Roseville, or Maplewood on an annual basis
The state of MINNESOTA
Apart from criminal legislation concerning animal cruelty, the State of Minnesota has few laws that proactively support our mission, and an overall poor (by our standards) legislative posture towards animal welfare.
Examples of Minnesota’s legal posture toward animals: ,[object Object]
Pound seizure is still legal under Minnesota law. Only MN, OK, and UT have yet to pass legislation to ban the practice
The current interpretation of and lobby for the Veterinary Practice Act (passed in 1947) actively impede the establishment of low cost spay/neuter services
Animal euthanasia by use of carbon monoxide gas chambers is still legal in the state of MinnesotaSource: www.banpoundseizure.org
“Euthanasia” and “population control”
Intact cats and dogs make up a disproportionate share of shelter intakes.Less than 20% of pets entering shelters are sterilized
Whether communities have high or low shelter euthanasia rates, the driving force remainsthe same:Intake drives Euthanasia
As a community’s pet sterilization rate goes up, its shelter intake rate goes down…AS A COMMUNITY’S SHELTER INTAKE RATE GOES DOWN, THE EUTHANASIA RATE GOES DOWN…and vice versa…THUS, A community’s euthanasia rate lowersor raises in direct relation to the lowering or raising of its intake
MANY communities now spend $3 or more per resident each year on reactive programs to impound, shelter, and kill homeless animals.
A comprehensive set of prevention programs ADDRESSING all the significant sources of companion animal homelessness IN THE TWIN CITIES would cost ROUGHLY $1 a year per resident
The Twin Cities metropolitan area has a population of around 2.85 Million people.WITH APPROPRIATE SUPPORT FROM THE MINNESOTA VETERINARY COMMUNITY ANDONLY $1 per year per resident…we could SUBSIDIZE THE SPAYING OR NEUTERING OF up to 190,000 animals PER YEAR
OUR MISSION
To provide care and no kill sheltering for Abandoned, & Abused Stray, cats until they are placed into suitable, permanent homes
To improve our community through Spay & Neuter, &Outreach Educational, programs and activities
Our programs and activities provide rescue and relief to homeless and endangered cats in our community Our programs and activities target the elimination of the community’s practice of euthanasia as a method of domestic cat population control Our programs and activities strive to enable all people in the community to responsibly enjoy the companionship of cats

  3. $500 million does not include the cost of recovery, temporary shelter, transport and all associated personnel costs. It’s just the cost of the killing.
  4. Why? Cats are: are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification are more likely to be diagnosed with “untreatable” but survivable conditions (e.g. FIV, FeLV) are deemed “feral”, and likely do not belong in shelters to begin with
  5. Cats are very unlikely to have any sort of identification (collar, tag), and the percentage of microchipped pets is very small. In addition, very few rescue organizations have access to microchip scanners.
  6. Shelter intake stats are 54% dog, 41% cat, 5% other. Animal Folks MN estimated 90,000 animals are euthanized in MN every year.In human terms, for cats only, this is equivalent to the loss of the population of Mankato, Maplewood, or St. Louis Park on an annual basis In human terms, the loss of all animals would be equivalent to losing Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, or Plymouth on an annual basis
  7. 80% of pets entering shelters are intact. Less than 20% are sterilized. These figures remain the same for both cats and dogs.
  8. The Twin Cities metro area has a population of about 2.85M people. For $1 per year we could:- Spay / neuter 190,000 animals
