We all recall the pleasure of learning to ride our very first classic ladies bike. I recall it clearly like it
were yesterday. I believe I was around five years old and I remember feeling frustrated mainly
because that 2 of my friends could ride bikes and I had been on training wheels! At some point dad
told me "it's time for it to learn to ride son".
We lived on a quiet street as well as in those days, some Forty years ago now, there have been
significantly fewer cars around to think about. So my dad removed the stabilisers so we went out. He
said in my opinion "just pedal and I'll push", and off we went across the road maybe once or twice.
After regarding the third run, I recall looking over my shoulder and seeing my dad way back in the
distance! I thought it was it, I was really washing dishes for the 1st time. And you understand what?
Yes you have guessed, I crashed! And in so doing,I scraped my knee and my arm and banged my
head! My dad came running up in my opinion looking extremely shaken and concerned and the man
said in my opinion, after I had recovered in the fall, "just get back on now and ride again".
Nevertheless the fall had really dented my confidence therefore it took an additional few runs with
my dad pushing to have me back into the swing of things. Needless to say right after more goes I
found that dad had let go again and that I was really riding again, however this time around I was
more cautious and didn't disappear.
In the past of course, people didn't seem to worry about basic safety equipment, like a cycle helmet
or knee and elbow pads.
Now the time has come that i can teach my daughter how to learn to ride a bike. Until very recently
I wasn't absolutely absolutely clear on the best way to start teaching her. Then I read a shorter
article about a thing called a balance or training bike so I checked against each other and soon
realised until this could possibly be the solution to my problems.
I'll be investing a single along with basic safety gear!
A balance bike is simply a regular bicycle with no pedals
and it has a height adjustable seat, and so the youngster
could place his feet firmly on the floor. The handlebars
won't turn as much as a normal bicycle, hence eliminating
the risk of pulling too much either way and achieving a
wobble. The child just sits and pushes using their legs
which enable it to free Wheel if they really feel comfortable
enough to get this done. Apparently, a child of a couple of
years old needs to have the natural sense of balance to
make this happen. There are many available in one form or some other, however I think this type of
bike could possibly be just the ticket.
