The Swedish Armed Forces
The Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) is a government agency that is responsible for the
training, planning and deployment of military forces both domestically and abroad. The Armed Forces
are divided into the Air force, the Navy and the Army.
Business Challenges
The Joint Concept Development & Experimentation Centre (JCDEC) is responsible for developing a
Knowledge Support concept that involves the next generation of joint intelligence and information man-
agement system that can be used by all armed forces. Search technology was identified early as a key
enabler to create a successful concept.
Basing decisions on old information would be bad in any environment, but doing so in a military envi-
ronment can end up costing people’s lives. A challenge when providing accurate decision support is to
minimise the time elapsed from a document being published until it is findable via the search solution.
Findwise Solution
The implemented Findability solution is based on the open source search platform Apache Solr and built
with a service-oriented approach. By using an enterprise service bus, the two content sources can push
updated objects to the search platform for indexing instead of the search platform having to ask the
content sources for updated objects. Other solution features include:

Users can comment on results.
Related objects and preview
Search results include related objects and a
tag cloud provides a quick overview of ob-
jects without having to open them.
Administration interface
Allow users to add facets, synonyms and
boost objects.

Presents popular queries, zero-result que-

2. Solution Results and Effects

The use of an enterprise service bus to push updated content to the search platform ensures that the
findable information is rapidly updated and that decisions can be made upon the latest information. The
administration and statistics interface allows the Armed Forces to monitor user behaviour and search
patterns and to tailor the solution providing maximum benefit to the organisation.
Due to the positive reception of the Findability solution. the system is now being considered to be the
solution of choice also for other parts of the Armed Forces.
