ICT-X PROGRAM PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL 2007

“The United Nations has long recognised that the imagination, ideals and energies
of young men and women are vital for the continuing development of the
societies in which they live. And since its inception in 1948, AIESEC has
contributed to this development by serving as an agent of positive change
through education and cultural exchange. In an era of globalisation, your
programmes have helped young people around the world to develop a broader
understanding of cultural, socio-economic and business management issues.”

                                   Kofi Annan

                                Secretary-General,

                                  United Nations

Dear Sir,
AIESEC is the International Platform for young people to discover and develop
their potential to have a positive impact in society. It is present in over 800

our members with over 5,000 leadership opportunities, 3,800 work abroad
opportunities, 350 conferences, and virtual tools to build networks.

Aiming to open new opportunities to our organisations for achieving our
objectives, we are proud to communicate you the current partnership proposal,
which captures and leverages all learning possibilities for our organisations
towards the building of leaders for the future.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

About AIESEC

AIESEC is an international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential to have a positive
impact on society.
Present in over 800 universities in 100 countries and territories, AIESEC provides young people the opportunity
to work abroad, develop leadership, build a personal network, and explore the direction and ambition of their
future.

Our innovative approach to developing young people focuses on taking a proactive role, developing self-
awareness and a personal vision, building networks, and developing capacity to drive change.

AIESEC in Africa aims to positively impact a significant amount of African youth
by offering them a platform of self-discovery and learning by doing around global
issues. Thus, 15 African countries participate in the project, while having a direct
impact on more than 400 students that run the program. Projects will be run
across Africa in the particular areas. These projects are based on physical
exchange and have a focus on education approaching different targets depending
on the local realities (University students, as well as local communities). Projects
have been selected to be run across Africa in the areas of ICT-X, HIV/AIDS,
Entrepreneurship and Tourism.

In Uganda, AIESEC decided that one of the focus areas of its activities will be ICT.
Information and communication technology (ICT) is regarded as a driver and
enabler in most if not all countries around the world. The extent of adoption and
usage of ICT in schools and small companies therefore becomes pivotal in
improving Uganda’s economy as a whole. Research by Makerere University (MUK)
and Rowan University has revealed that the adoption of ICT by firms in
developing countries (like Uganda) follows the same pattern as in developed
countries and they only differ in level of usage and adoption. Firms as well as
schools do appreciate the contribution of ICT to their performance, but there are
various barriers which prevent them from tapping into ICT’S potential.

Many students in Uganda do not have any access to computers up to the average
age of 18 years for those who join University and even later for those who do not
join University. We should seek to encourage students to learn and appreciate
information technology by providing them with the necessary computer skills and
also equipping their teachers to educate and effectively integrate computers into
the teaching programme. Appropriate logical approaches need to be identified in
order to maximize the use of computers in our schools.

Some points to note about ICT in Uganda include:
• ICT’s are new phenomena in Uganda.
   • The use of ICT’s follows the development of the countries: more developed
       = more use of ICT’s

“The priority for Africans is not large buildings or installations, but access to new technology – for with
that, people will invent new uses and expand their lives, in the progress becoming agents of change
rather than (as they are often depicted) passive recipients of aid.”

                                                                                       Mark Malloch Brown

ICT-X PROGRAM

PROJECT’S OBJECTIVES

   • Providing students with a very exciting, quality, and diverse cultural
platform to gain computer skills while learning about different cultures and
       leadership skills.
   • To provide information technology knowledge to some of our high school youth who
may not have accessibility to the computers up till an older age.
   • Provide technical assistance and training both in schools and companies.
   • Improve on different companies’ abilities in managing company data,
integrating computer networks and simplifying labour.

GENERAL IDEA OF THE PROJECT
The project will take place in fourteen countries

in Africa (Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast,

Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal,

South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, Togo and Uganda)

The objective of the ICT-X Program is to enable small companies
and high schools to effectively tap into I.C.T skills and knowledge
of young talented recent graduates while giving this young talent
experience in the corporate world.

AIESEC will provide international university students that will deliver
different learning activities to the local students in the mentioned
countries. The learning activities will use the methodology of ‘peer
education’. The international university students will be previously selected
and prepared in their countries of origin by the AIESEC offices in the
respective countries. From the total number of exchange students we aim
to achieve 50% of internal exchanges within African countries and 50% of
university students coming from other countries of the world.

The presence of the international students is one of the main motivational factors
for the local students to participate in the program and is also an opportunity for
meeting and having chats with young people from different countries with
different realities and perspectives on ICT.
A closing Seminar will be organized during the last month of the program. During
the event, various presentations will be held by each of the international teams
and special participation of some of the High school students, local teachers,
representatives of the board of Experts and partner companies of the project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Recruitment and selection campaign program will be run in all African countries to
select the students that will participate in the project. (Both students for
exchange and high school students that will develop the start ups). Non-African
countries will also run a recruitment and selection campaign for exchange
students. Promotion in media is planned to happen as well as information
meetings at different faculties.

In Uganda, The project is to be run in both small companies and High schools.

Selection of High schools will be under the following criteria

   • Registration under the ministry of education and sports in Uganda.
   • Possession of a minimum of 10 computers.

The companies /organizations are to selected under the following criteria

   • Legal registration.
   • Minimum three functioning computers.
   • Minimum of three computer literate employees.

During the Opening event, trainers will be introduced to the companies and
schools in participation. During this event, different personalities will discuss the
issues of computer education and its impact in the country. The event will be
open to the whole student fraternity.

Also at least one learning and one external event will take place. During the
seminars/workshops, different organizations/entities showcase their role and
contribution to computer education in the country. Through these, the
international students will have the opportunity to present and share their
knowledge.
At the end of the two months the students are expected to use their acquired
skills for constructive ventures.

In Companies, the employees will receive training on how to effectively use their
computer technology. At the end of the training, the employees will have the
tools to manage the records and finance and the ability to effectively perform
daily duties using computers.

Last point of the project delivery will be the closing event

To officially close the project, students will hold an exhibition of work generated
exhibits using newly acquired skills.

In companies, the students the employees will be expected to have
switched to the efficient and cheap way of managing data attained from the
project.

MORE INFO ON ICT-X[1]

  • 1. DECEMBER 2007 Attention: MARKETING MANAGER DYER AND BLAIR INVESTMENT BANK LTD Uganda ICT-X PROGRAM PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL 2007 “The United Nations has long recognised that the imagination, ideals and energies of young men and women are vital for the continuing development of the societies in which they live. And since its inception in 1948, AIESEC has contributed to this development by serving as an agent of positive change through education and cultural exchange. In an era of globalisation, your programmes have helped young people around the world to develop a broader understanding of cultural, socio-economic and business management issues.” Kofi Annan Secretary-General, United Nations Dear Sir,
  • 2. AIESEC is the International Platform for young people to discover and develop their potential to have a positive impact in society. It is present in over 800 universities in 100 countries and territories. Since 1948, as the largest university based network of young people, we provide our members with over 5,000 leadership opportunities, 3,800 work abroad opportunities, 350 conferences, and virtual tools to build networks. Aiming to open new opportunities to our organisations for achieving our objectives, we are proud to communicate you the current partnership proposal, which captures and leverages all learning possibilities for our organisations towards the building of leaders for the future. We thank you in advance for your consideration to this proposal and will be glad to work together in the implementation of this project. Kindly contact us using our contacts below for further information. Sincerely, Ochieng Moses Kateete Kevin W. Director Team Leader Promotions ICT-X PROGRAM 2008 ICT-X PROGRAM 2008 Mob: +256753435333 Mob: +256753248205 coengmoses@gmail.com kateetekevin@yahoo.com PROJECT BACKGROUND About AIESEC AIESEC is an international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential to have a positive impact on society.
  • 3. Present in over 800 universities in 100 countries and territories, AIESEC provides young people the opportunity to work abroad, develop leadership, build a personal network, and explore the direction and ambition of their future. Our innovative approach to developing young people focuses on taking a proactive role, developing self- awareness and a personal vision, building networks, and developing capacity to drive change. AIESEC in Africa aims to positively impact a significant amount of African youth by offering them a platform of self-discovery and learning by doing around global issues. Thus, 15 African countries participate in the project, while having a direct impact on more than 400 students that run the program. Projects will be run across Africa in the particular areas. These projects are based on physical exchange and have a focus on education approaching different targets depending on the local realities (University students, as well as local communities). Projects have been selected to be run across Africa in the areas of ICT-X, HIV/AIDS, Entrepreneurship and Tourism. In Uganda, AIESEC decided that one of the focus areas of its activities will be ICT. Information and communication technology (ICT) is regarded as a driver and enabler in most if not all countries around the world. The extent of adoption and usage of ICT in schools and small companies therefore becomes pivotal in improving Uganda’s economy as a whole. Research by Makerere University (MUK) and Rowan University has revealed that the adoption of ICT by firms in developing countries (like Uganda) follows the same pattern as in developed countries and they only differ in level of usage and adoption. Firms as well as schools do appreciate the contribution of ICT to their performance, but there are various barriers which prevent them from tapping into ICT’S potential. Many students in Uganda do not have any access to computers up to the average age of 18 years for those who join University and even later for those who do not join University. We should seek to encourage students to learn and appreciate information technology by providing them with the necessary computer skills and also equipping their teachers to educate and effectively integrate computers into the teaching programme. Appropriate logical approaches need to be identified in order to maximize the use of computers in our schools. Some points to note about ICT in Uganda include:
  • 4. ICT’s are new phenomena in Uganda. • The use of ICT’s follows the development of the countries: more developed = more use of ICT’s “The priority for Africans is not large buildings or installations, but access to new technology – for with that, people will invent new uses and expand their lives, in the progress becoming agents of change rather than (as they are often depicted) passive recipients of aid.” Mark Malloch Brown ICT-X PROGRAM PROJECT’S OBJECTIVES • Providing students with a very exciting, quality, and diverse cultural platform to gain computer skills while learning about different cultures and leadership skills. • To provide information technology knowledge to some of our high school youth who may not have accessibility to the computers up till an older age. • Provide technical assistance and training both in schools and companies. • Improve on different companies’ abilities in managing company data, integrating computer networks and simplifying labour. GENERAL IDEA OF THE PROJECT
  • 5. The project will take place in fourteen countries in Africa (Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, Togo and Uganda) The objective of the ICT-X Program is to enable small companies and high schools to effectively tap into I.C.T skills and knowledge of young talented recent graduates while giving this young talent experience in the corporate world. AIESEC will provide international university students that will deliver different learning activities to the local students in the mentioned countries. The learning activities will use the methodology of ‘peer education’. The international university students will be previously selected and prepared in their countries of origin by the AIESEC offices in the respective countries. From the total number of exchange students we aim to achieve 50% of internal exchanges within African countries and 50% of university students coming from other countries of the world. The presence of the international students is one of the main motivational factors for the local students to participate in the program and is also an opportunity for meeting and having chats with young people from different countries with different realities and perspectives on ICT.
  • 6. A closing Seminar will be organized during the last month of the program. During the event, various presentations will be held by each of the international teams and special participation of some of the High school students, local teachers, representatives of the board of Experts and partner companies of the project. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Recruitment and selection campaign program will be run in all African countries to select the students that will participate in the project. (Both students for exchange and high school students that will develop the start ups). Non-African countries will also run a recruitment and selection campaign for exchange students. Promotion in media is planned to happen as well as information meetings at different faculties. In Uganda, The project is to be run in both small companies and High schools. Selection of High schools will be under the following criteria • Registration under the ministry of education and sports in Uganda. • Possession of a minimum of 10 computers. The companies /organizations are to selected under the following criteria • Legal registration. • Minimum three functioning computers. • Minimum of three computer literate employees. During the Opening event, trainers will be introduced to the companies and schools in participation. During this event, different personalities will discuss the issues of computer education and its impact in the country. The event will be open to the whole student fraternity. Also at least one learning and one external event will take place. During the seminars/workshops, different organizations/entities showcase their role and contribution to computer education in the country. Through these, the international students will have the opportunity to present and share their knowledge.
  • 7. At the end of the two months the students are expected to use their acquired skills for constructive ventures. In Companies, the employees will receive training on how to effectively use their computer technology. At the end of the training, the employees will have the tools to manage the records and finance and the ability to effectively perform daily duties using computers. Last point of the project delivery will be the closing event To officially close the project, students will hold an exhibition of work generated exhibits using newly acquired skills. In companies, the students the employees will be expected to have switched to the efficient and cheap way of managing data attained from the project.
