Most research related to secure routing in sensor networks has focused on how to detect and defend against a single attack. However, it is not feasible to predict which attack will occur in sensor networks. It is possible for multiple attacks to occur simultaneously, degrading the performance of the existing security schemes. For example, an attacker may try simultaneous false report and wormhole attacks to effectively damage a sensor network. Hence, a multiple simultaneous attack environment is much more complex than a single attack environment. Thus, a new security scheme that can detect multiple simultaneous attacks with a high probability and low energy consumption is needed. In this paper, we propose a secure routing scheme to defend against wormhole and false report attacks in sensor networks. The proposed method achieves a higher attack detection ratio and consumes less energy in a multi-attack scenario compared to existing schemes. It can also be extended to other types of attacks and security schemes to detect and defend against possible combinations of multiple attacks.

The SCISSOR project designed a scalable SCADA security monitoring framework with the following characteristics: i) integration of a wide range of heterogeneous sensors; ii) a dynamically adaptable, distributed data aggregation framework; iii) advanced detection and correlation models as extensions to a conventional SIEM; iv) exploitation of modern cloud-computing concepts. Thanks to this framework, situational awareness is established in a scalable manner in near real-time by correlating events coming from very heterogeneous sensors.

The challenging nature of insecure wireless channels and the open-access environment make the protection of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) a particularly critical issue. Robust approaches to protect this network's security and privacy against attacks need to be improved, trying to achieve an adequate level, to secure the confidential information of drivers and passengers. Accordingly, to improve the security of VANET, it is necessary to carry out a risk assessment, in order to evaluate the risk this network is facing. This paper focuses on the security threats in VANET, particularly on the availability of this network. We propose a novel risk assessment approach to evaluate the risk of the attack against VANET availability. We adopt a tree structure called attack-tree to model the attacker's potential attack strategies. Based on this attack-tree, we can estimate the probability that a specific menace might lead against VANET and detect potential attack sequences that an attacker could launch against VANET availability. Then, we utilize the utility multi-attribute theory to measure the total risk value of the system, including the probabilities of each sequence of attack. The analysis results of the study will help decision-makers take effective precautions to prevent attack on this network’s availability.

Securing Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) from variable forms of adversary is still an open end challenge. Review of diversified security apprroaches towards such problems that they are highly symptomatic with respect to resiliency strength against attack. Therefore, the proposed system highlights a novel and effective solution that is capable of identify the spurios request for participating in teh network building process from attacker and in return could deviate the route of attacker to some virtual nodes and links. A simple trust based mechanism is constructed for validating the legitimacy of such request generated from adversary node. The proposed system not only presents a security solution but also assists in enhancing the routing process significantly. The simulated outcome of the study shows that proposed system offers significantly good energy conservation, satisfactory data forwarding performance, reduced processing time in contrast to existing standard security practices.

In this paper we present a Predator-Prey approach to enhance the protection of a restricted area using a swarm of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). We have chosen the CACOC (Chaotic Ant Colony Optimisation for Coverage) mobility model for the UAVs and a new model for intruders based on attractive and repulsive forces. After proposing a number of parameters for each mobility model, we have conducted a competitive optimisation of them (Predators and Preys), to achieve a more robust configuration improving the success rate of UAVs when detecting intruders. We have optimised three case studies by performing 30 independent runs of our competitive coevolutionary genetic algorithm and conducted a number of master tournaments using the best specimens obtained for each case study. https://doi.org/10.1109/IPDPSW50202.2020.00094

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is regularly deployed in unattended and hostile environments. The WSN is vulnerable to security threats and susceptible to physical capture. Thus, it is necessary to use effective mechanisms to protect the network. It is widely known, that the intrusion detection is one of the most efficient security mechanisms to protect the network against malicious attacks or unauthorized access. In this paper, we propose a hybrid intrusion detection system for clustered WSN. Our intrusion framework uses a combination between the Anomaly Detection based on support vector machine (SVM) and the Misuse Detection. Experiments results show that most of routing attacks can be detected with low false alarm.

However, the disadvantage is that WSNs are randomly distributed in an open environment, which makes them difficult to manage individually and more easily found and compromised by an attacker. An attacker can execute a false report insertion or invalid vote insertion attack through a compromised node. The Probabilistic Voting Filtering System (PVFS) is a system that prevents these two types of attacks. Before sending a report, the proposed method probabilistically selects a validation node, determines the validity of the report, and filters the report based on the thresholds that have been set. In this paper, the proposed scheme improves the lifetime, detection rate, and report delivery rate of the entire network by increasing the lifetime of the cluster head (CH) by selecting the numbers of message authentication codes (MACs) and verification nodes of the report. Using this system, the event detection rate and the network lifetime are improved by up to 18% and 6%, respectively, relative to the existing PVFS.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
