Apprenticeship secretary: employee of Syntra Vlaanderen (civel servant) – they are the link between Syntra West and the employer – their task: follow-up of the apprentice in the workplace – most of the secretaries have their office in Syntra West – number of apprentices: in 2010 in West-Flanders: about 800 (the number goes down every year) Reasons: Image (it is seen as a last opportunity for youngsters with social/learning problems) The competition with vocational schools: as school communities were created (= grammar, technical, vocational school being part of one school community), the schools try to keep the students in their own community The apprenticeship certificate is not accredited as allowing students going to higher education. However, the system is successful: employment 95% (external survey – every three years) Our Minister -) started procedure for adaptation in order to have the official recognition of the certificates Traditional professions: grown historically – independent professions recognised by Syntra Vlaanderen e.g. painter, bodywork, hairdresser, beautician, carpenter, baker, butcher, … Combination of general education (thematically) – vocational training Parents keep their child allowance Remuneration by the employer of about 300 to 400€/month There is a booklet which is the link between the training in Syntra West and the workplace. To check whether what is learned matches with what is carried out (the apprentice should really learn the profession and should not do the dirty work in the workplace)
Certified: further training – mainly a profession (e.g. pattern designer, isolation expert, energy expert, responsible of nursery, …) – should always be applied for by SVL - the programme/the curriculum is made up together with internal sectoral workers and professionals – is than officially recognised (certificate handed out by SVL) Specialisation courses which are not certified: connected to a profession but which do not train towards a profession (reading balances, French in the pharmacy, environmental administration, prospection by telephone, upgrade office 2010, working on height, sustainable construction, ...) Not certified: attestation made up by SW – no official value
Intermediate level Bachelor – master : too heavy 100% focused on the profession (no other subjects like in higher education) – entrepreneurial training is also part of the learning programme – you can start your own company when finishing this type of training Gap in the market: higher vocational education (in Flanders nothing done regarding this: SW does) For youngsters who successfully finished their secondary education Parents keep their child allowance.
“ Contact education”: in a classroom – TLC: support for people with learning and/or language problems Trainers: most of the time: have their own business Profile of the trainer needed for the training is available (ISO-procedure selection of trainers) Syntra West disposes of a “Trainerscoach”: new trainer gets a basic training didactics (6 hours) – observation of the trainer by internal worker or trainerscoach – evaluations and feedback conversations – newsletter for trainers – possibilities for following training (e.g. mindmapping, making up a syllabus, practice-oriented training – these are 1-day topics) – they get a cheque of 200€ to follow training within SW – meetings of trainers are organised E-learning, blended learning: some applications: electronics, business management Competence-based learning: Starting from the professional and competence profile, the curricula/the training contents are determined (e.g. for the certified trainings) For trainings in companies: from the competence profile, the training content is made up (best match) Using (Micro)Comet for defining competence dictionnaries, making up competence profiles, analysing training needs.
