- Born: 9th May 1935

3. Roger Hargreaves
• Early Life;
- Hargreaves’ early ambition was to
become a cartoonist.
- However, he ended up working for his
Father’s laundry and dry cleaning business.
- Before going on to gain employment in
advertising.
4. Roger Hargreaves
• Life Changing Moment;
- Whilst working as the creative director at
a London film, he wrote the very first Mr.
Men book, Mr Tickle.
- The first of the Mr. Men characters is
reported to have been created when his 6
year old son asked him what a tickle looked
like.
6. The Mr Men
• Initially, he had difficulty finding a publisher,
but once he did the books became an instant
success.
• Selling over 1 million copies within 3 years.
• In 1974, the books were animated in to a BBC
television series and by 1976 Hargreaves had
quit his day job.
8. Little Miss
• In 1981 the Little Miss series of books were
launched, which was also animated in to a
television series alongside the Mr. Men.
• Despite Hargreaves writing many other
children’s stories, including the Timbuctoo
series of books, he is best known for his 46 Mr.
Men and 33 Little Miss Books.

• In 1988, Hargreaves died following a stroke.
• After his death, his son continued writing and
drawing the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters
with new stories.
• However, in April 2004 Hargreaves’ wife sold
the rights to the characters to the UK
entertainment group Chorion, for £28 million.

Roger Hargreaves’ books are simple and easy to read with
brightly coloured pictures. They have short sentences
which usually match the picture opposite and this makes it
easier for a child to read on their own.
Ideas for lessons:
• Put the story in the right order - showing
beginning, middle and end.
• Match the pictures to the sentences.
• Put the correct word in the sentence.
13. Characters
The Mr. Men and Little Miss characters are very
recognisable. They use familiar shapes, bright colours and
have a wide range of personalities.
Ideas for lessons:
• Play “Who am I?” and get the children to
describe characters such as Little Miss
Neat.
• Make up a new character with a new
personality trait.

with a full stop, exclamation or question mark in written language,
containing a main verb. For example “He gave Mr. Uppity the shock of his
life.”
•Phrase;
A phrase is a group of words that go together, but do not make a complete
sentence. For example “He gave Mr. Uppity the shock of his life.”
•Clause;
A clause is a part of a sentence that usually contains a subject or verb. It is
usually connected to the other part of the sentence by a conjunction. It is
not a complete sentence on its own. For example ““He gave Mr. Uppity the
shock of his life.”
