Santorini is a Greek island located in the southern Aegean Sea, northeast of Crete. It is what remains of a massive volcanic eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and created the current geological caldera. The island is formed from volcanic ash and pumice and has steep cliffs on three sides, with the caldera forming a large bay with water hundreds of meters deep on the fourth side.
