3. SEPOY MUTINTY
• British East India Company ruled India with soldiers

• Hired Indian soldiers called sepoys
• Rumors that the British were supplying bullets

muslims
• Caused Sepoy to rebel
4. RESULTS OF THE REBELLION
• Kanpur: Indian rebels slaughtered 200 women
• Parliament transferred powers of the East India Co.
to Parliament
• Queen Victoria made the people of India her
colonial subjects

5. BENEFITS OF BRITISH RULE
• Brought order and stability to society
• New school system set up
• Trained children to serve in the government and army
• Railroads, the telegraph, and a postal service were
introduced

• Introduction of British goods (i.e. textiles) put
thousands out of work
• Taxes were increased by collectors
• Farmers were forced to grow cotton instead of food
causing famine
• Indian people were treated unfairly
