13. Pacific Fibre plans international fibre
cable connecting Oz, NZ and US
A newly formed company called Pacific Fibre is
seeking funding to build a 5.12Tbps capacity fibre-
optic cable connecting Australia, New Zealand and
the USA which is planned to be ready for use in
2013. The initial proposal is for a cable which will
deliver five times the capacity of the existing
Southern Cross system. Pacific Fibre’s aim is to
deliver the highest capacity and lowest latency
international internet service to Australia and New
Zealand by connecting the two countries to the US
via 13,000km of cable.

14. Telkom picks TRG to deploy 802.16d
WiMAX platform
PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has selected PT Teknologi Riset
Global (TRG), an affiliate of leading Indonesian infrastructure
developer the Indonesian Tower Group, to supply it with a national
802.16d WiMAX solution in the recently freed up 3.3GHz band.
Telkom’s announcement follows a ministry decree calling on
operators to migrate from the 3.5GHz to 3.3GHz band, while
sticking with 802.16d accredited technology. The telco says it has
already deployed TRG’s WiMAX solution in four regions: West Java,
Jakarta, Sumatra Island and Kalimantan Island. TRG has been
working with Canada’s Tranzeo Wireless Technologies Inc, which
manufactures wireless broadband and WiMAX communication
systems from its base in British Columbia, to integrate WiMAX
equipment for Indonesian carriers with licensed spectrum at 2.3GHz
and 3.3GHz, it said.
