Brief
intro
to
‘Playing
Out’
–
what
are
we
about?
http://playingout.net/
Our
vision:
Children
across
the
UK
are
able
to
play
out
freely
and
safely
on
the
streets
where
they
live.
We
do
this
by
• Communicating
the
importance
of
street
play
widely
to
influence
cultural
attitudes
and
behaviour
• Being
a
source
of
experience-‐based,
accessible/friendly,
high
quality
guidance
and
advice
.
Currently,
our
work
is
centred
on
‘rolling
out’
a
tested
model
of
playing
out
sessions;
short,
afterschool
road
closures
that
follow
a
fairly
formal
procedure.
There
may
be
future
models.
• Embracing
and
communicating
the
necessity
of
Free
Play
(unstructured,
semi-‐
or
un-‐supervised,
children
just
doing
their
own
thing)
• Building
and
modeling
an
attitude
of
neighbourliness
.
Sharing
strategies
for
developing
neighbour
relationships,
growing
community.
• Enabling
and
inspiring
resident-led
action
• Building
a
(UK/worldwide)
grassroots
movement
in
support
of
children’s
greater
freedom
to
play
out
• Working
with
policy-‐makers
in
Transport,
Health,
Community,
Young
People
and
more
to
embed
all
of
the
above.
Here are three areas of work that have been on our to do list for
some time. They are listed in order of priority.
The
Network:
Aim:
Rationalise
existing
online
media
and
create
new
components
for
network
communications
to
include:
• Mailing
list
/
subscribers
network
(we
would
ask
all
Facebook
members
and
existing
email
contacts
to
join
(approx.
500
to
date)?)
Streamline
current
‘contact
us’
page
on
website
–
take
away
form(?)
and
have
Mailchimp
and
2.
network/Facebook
sign-‐up
instead,
with
simple
email
address
(and
phone)
contact
details.
• Blog
(ideally
embedded
within
website)
and
syndicated
to
Facebook
(group
or
page?),
mailing
list
and
twitter.
Keep
archival
categories
really
simple.
• Simple
discussion
Forum:
Q.
What
are
the
implications
of
this
re:
moderators—
what
kind
of
time
does
this
involve?
(SECURITY
is
paramount,
possible
mapping
system
so
that
interested
members
can
locate
others
in
their
area.
If
mapping
poses
security
risk,
then
don’t
do
it).
Simplicity
is
key
here.
Must
be
super
easy
to
use
and
have
explicit,
easy
to
follow
instructions.
Map
or
other
element
to
include
local
info
by
area
(council
and
other
contacts/policy
etc.).
Low
maintenance
would
be
ideal.
Wiki-‐type,
crowd
sourced
ethos?
How
do
you
maintain
quality,
reduce
mis-‐information?)
• Contact
and
Email
Newsletter:
design
Mailchimp
template
that
is
in
keeping
with
the
website
aesthetic
and
‘branding’…
Guidance
Materials:
Aim:
to
improve
guidance
materials
and
increase
accessibility/ease
of
use
for
different
learning
types.
Using
the
content
of
existing
guidance
manual
and
other
materials,
create
alternative
modes
of
access.
• Guidance
videos:
Break
manual
into
series
of
short
instructive
videos.
Create
shooting
scripts/storyboard
for
these
that
have
a
personal,
warm
humour,
include
both
direct
address
to
camera
and
street-‐level
scenarios.
• Email
guidance
sequence:
Break
manual
down
into
an
email
sequence
that
members
can
subscribe
to
and
be
‘fed’
at
correct
intervals
throughout
their
planning.
• New
general
Playing
Out
leaflet:
to
include
four
simple
steps?
Needs
more
consideration
and
clarity
of
intent.
(Aimed
at
potential
organisers
and/or
general
public?)
• Email
ongoing
motivation
series:
For
folks
who
are
already
doing
TPSO
but
might
need
a
little
nudge
from
time
to
time?
Content
would
need
writing
but
mechanism
could
be
created?
(low
priority)
3.
• Email
guidance
/motivation
sequence:
“Easy
and
Effortless
things”
(low
priority)
The
Shop
(pop-up
and
online):
Aim:
To
advance
envisioning,
planning,
thinking
and
design
towards
a
pop-‐up
style
shop
and
online
shop.
Feasibility?
• Online
shop:
Simple,
limited
stock?
To
include
books
that
align
with
the
free
play
and
neighbour/community
building
ethos,
Road
Closure
Kit,
simple,
inexpensive
but
high
quality
street
play
(and
street
reclaiming?)
related
bits
chalk,
skipping
rope,
T-‐shirts.
Other?
• Pop-up
Shop:
Same
as
above
only
including,
in-‐person
advice
line,
refreshments?
Talks,
debates,
participatory
events,
workshops,
etc…
on
related
themes,
Gallery?
General
questions
and
considerations:
Which
Facebook
link
do
we
keep?
Page
or
group
or
both?
I
think
page,
and
the
forum
takes
over
for
the
group?
(AF
-‐
yes
and
that
means
we
can
push
the
‘liking’
a
bit
more,
so
page
becomes
more
of
a
public
face/outlet)
Aesthetic
and
language
for
all
please
keep
simple
and
personal
with
very
low-‐key
branding.
Maintain
chalk-‐on-‐pavement
aesthetic.
Materials
must
not
be
slick
or
corporate!
‘Neighbourly’
tone
is
vital.
Respect
and
gentle
humour.
Integrity,
safety
and
child
protection
are
big
considerations.
We
cannot
put
information
/materials
out
that
has
not
been
risk/benefit
assessed
and
trialed
personally
by
us.
