Reflection

The present reflection is based not only,on the text “Vocabulary connections: multi-word
items in English”but also the summary that was written by me based on the same text;
moreover, the different features and classifications that the multi- word items have and
how they help to achieve some of the specific objectives of the course Lexical Analysis.

In the text that was mentioned before is explained in a very complete way the different
types of multi-word items; furthermore it revealed the significance and the intricacy of the
links between words, avoiding to refer at words as an isolated unit.

The text help us as futures teacher to recognize and understand the different
classifications of multi-word item, besides how can we teach them, because multi- word
items are language-specific and they have particular sociocultural connotations and
associations, due to that they are difficult to learn. Moreover the text allow us to learn
and comprehend that words are not as simple as an isolated unit, words have boundaries
and also can be seen as a sequence of one or more morphemes, which are bounded.

In terms of the contribution of the text to the Lexical Analysis course is very relevant due
to, as I mentioned before, this text help us to achieve 2 of the specific objectives of the
course which ones are, characterise word formation processes in the English language,
and analyze words in terms of free and bound morphemes. The firs specific objective is
clearly achieved when we read about the characteristic and divisions of multi-words
items, when it show us the variability, the traditions and models, the context in which
their use is more appropriate between other characteristics. And the second objective is
achieved when the text show the terms and categories of the multi-word items into 3
categories which are the institutionalization, fixedness and non-compositionality and also
to the different types of multi-word items such as phrasal verbs, compounds, idioms,
between others.

From my point of view the text apart from being thought-provoking is also very useful,
allowing me to contextualize and complement the contents that we study during the
classes; moreover the text is written in an understandable mode making the process of
the study and reading more comprehensive. Another relevant detail is that the
information that the text has is very clear, the topics are well developed with the
necessary information and good examples. As a future teacher of the English Language I
think that is crucial that we know about those topics that were explained in the text,
because those topics are an important part in the process of learning the English
language, due to they put us in a specific real cultural context.
