9. Not only did Arey mold the new institution of higher learning, but he was also responsible for developing the state college system in Wisconsin. Arey left Wisconsin in 1876, returning to Buffalo to teach, and then became Principal of the Cleveland City Normal School in 1879. He retired in 1882. Dr. Clarence Oliver Arey died in his home in Cleveland on August 11, 1896 at the age of 39, just 5 years after the death of his son Lawrence. “ Honorable and upright in the smallest, as well as the largest matters entrusted to his care, he was one such as the world delights to honor. To his widow and his two little children we extend our heartfelt sympathy and commiserations.” Journal of the Association of Engineering Societies, Vol. 17 (1896) “ Dr. Clarence O. Arey, Tuesday afternoon. Funeral at his residence, 985 East Madison Avenue at 4:00 p.m., standard.”
