Developing Study Strategies YOU are the MAIN ACTOR in the drama of studying. YOU have to get actively engaged in the business of developing effective study strategies or habits. It is NOT your TUTOR’S responsibility. 2
Distinction  about teaching and learning in the university  ,[object Object]
Universities are set up to facilitate learning.,[object Object]
Study at School is teacher-led but in the university the learning model is student–led In school, all that you need to know is covered in your classes. This is not so at the university; the lecturer  will provide a highly synthesised ‘map’ of the specific subject area being covered. You will be expected to explore the map in more detail. Lecturing, among others, is the main teaching method used in a University.

The Lecturers, the Library Staff and those in specialised departments are there to help you when you need them.
But you do have to learn how to use what is there, and do not be afraid to ask for help.,[object Object]
Each successive lecture deals with a different sub-discipline of the main subject area.
Lectures represent the planned route through the subject study unit
The contents of the lectures themselves broaden the foundation on which the unit programme is based.
Every lecture will introduce you to the underlying theory, analyse and explain complex issues and generally add to your knowledge of the central framework of the whole course.,[object Object]
Determined to succeed and to attain goals set for themselves. Avoid trouble that steals their quality time. 9 VISIONARY ACHIEVERS
‘JUST-PASSING-THROUGHS’ Do not as yet have any vision or mission for being at the University/ High School. They are just ‘walking through’ the University/ High School. They waste time; are distracted by the apparent freedom in the uni. 10
DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS - How? Focus Your Efforts No matter your problems and limitations, your aspirations or whatever,  your primary goal NOW should be efficiently handling your school work. 11

It creates extra work for the student and not his/her classmates
Borrowing lecture notes to copy, reading a related textbook, which you did not personally process can be difficult and an avoidable waste of time.13

Time is the coin of your life.  It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.  - Carl Sandburg 17 What does Time mean for you?
What is Time Management?  	The day by day process of  planned  and controlled use of time, through:  the elimination of timewasters and  utilization of time savers. 18

  • 2. Developing Study Strategies YOU are the MAIN ACTOR in the drama of studying. YOU have to get actively engaged in the business of developing effective study strategies or habits. It is NOT your TUTOR’S responsibility. 2

  • 5. Study at School is teacher-led but in the university the learning model is student–led In school, all that you need to know is covered in your classes. This is not so at the university; the lecturer will provide a highly synthesised ‘map’ of the specific subject area being covered. You will be expected to explore the map in more detail. Lecturing, among others, is the main teaching method used in a University.

  • 7. The Lecturers, the Library Staff and those in specialised departments are there to help you when you need them.

  • 9. Each successive lecture deals with a different sub-discipline of the main subject area.
  • 10. Lectures represent the planned route through the subject study unit
  • 11. The contents of the lectures themselves broaden the foundation on which the unit programme is based.

  • 13. Determined to succeed and to attain goals set for themselves. Avoid trouble that steals their quality time. 9 VISIONARY ACHIEVERS
  • 14. ‘JUST-PASSING-THROUGHS’ Do not as yet have any vision or mission for being at the University/ High School. They are just ‘walking through’ the University/ High School. They waste time; are distracted by the apparent freedom in the uni. 10
  • 15. DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS - How? Focus Your Efforts No matter your problems and limitations, your aspirations or whatever, your primary goal NOW should be efficiently handling your school work. 11

  • 19. Borrowing lecture notes to copy, reading a related textbook, which you did not personally process can be difficult and an avoidable waste of time.13
