My evaluation – question 4
1. 4) How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Within the construction of my products I have used a variety of technologies
during the processes of planning and research.
The most important technology and platform that I used is Blogger. This was
the platform that has allowed me to display my entire process through
research and planning to my final products in a digitally organised way. I have
also been able to apply tags to each stage to make it much easier to navigate
around the site than if I would have used an alternative platform.
2. Right at the beginning of my research and planning stages, I used Google Docs to
create my questionnaire that I asked my potential audience to fill out. The first time I
used this technology was for my AS coursework, and at that time, it was quite
difficult at times to navigate around but as this was my second time, I found it a lot
easier and quicker to produce my questions.
3. Another technology that has been very useful during my research is Flikr. This was
a much easier and interactive way of allowing me to analyse existing movie posters
and magazines to contribute inspiration towards my ancillary products. Using this
new media, I made noted annotations around the image that you can see by
hovering over it, which makes it much less crowded with writing than simply
annotated boxes around the edge using a different technology such as Microsoft
Publisher for example.
4. Furthermore, in the research process for my ancillary products and trailer, I used
SlideShare. SlideShare made for a more visual representation of analysis of
trailers for my blog rather than just a simple essay with no images. This was the
first time I had used SlideShare and I found it very easy to navigate and had no
troubles whilst doing my research.
5. YouTube has also allowed us to gain all of our feedback for our draft and final
trailer. This, along with allowing me to view and upload many videos of
trailers to my blog to accompany my research, has made it much easier for
me to analyse those trailers. By having this luxury I was able to look at codes
and conventions of horror film trailers to gain inspiration for our own.
6. Also, as previously mentioned, I used the platform Padlet to display my final
ancillary products for my evaluation. It allowed people to voice their
feedback on my products which has helped when reviewing the comments
for my evaluation.
7. Finally, the technology to display this evaluation was done using Prezi. To learn
how to navigate my way around how to do this effectively, I had to watch a
few tutorials but eventually it became a lot easier and it was a creative way to
present my evaluation. However, at times the site did shut down and made it
inaccessible and unable for anybody to view my Prezi’s which could prove to
be a big problem. Due to this, I might change some of my analysis or present
my evaluation on a different platform/software.
8. Overall...
I believe that I have created 3 products that have all used, developed and also
challenged the conventions of real media products, which I feel combine
effectively to create my own brand and convergence between the different
platforms. Through the use of new media technologies I have viewed and
displayed my research and planning, as well as my construction processes and
evaluation in a manageable, organised way. I have also managed to effectively
collate feedback from my potential audience which has helped me to get initial
research into what conventions my products should include, through the use of
my questionnaire. These methods have also allowed me to see what people's
thoughts on what I have created. I have learned a lot through this entire
process and gained a real insight into how much work goes behind producing
just a trailer to promote a film and overall creating a brand.
