3. Our school is established in 1967 in new urban area in Zagreb, as two older schools merged and moved to the new building. One year after the surroundings were cultivated as well. Many poplar trees have been planted which become the symbol our school. Since 1991. our school in named after Jure Kaštelan, renowned Croatian poet, and the School Day is on his birthday, December 18 th . Since mid- 90ies very popular school magazine “The magic flute” is published yearly. It is titled after one Kaštelan’s poem. Since 2003. our school is the member of the International Eco Schools A ssociation. Since 2008. our school participates in the international school partnership projects of the Academy of Central European Schools.
4. Jure Kaštelan Jure Kaštelan was born on December 18 th 1919 in Omiš on the Adriatic coast. He studied literature at the Philosophical faculty of the University of Zagreb. In 1940. he self-published his first collection of poems “Red horse” with the ilustrations of the nowadays famous Croatian painter Edo Murtić. After the World War 2 he continued his studies and established himself as a renowned poet and literature editor. In 1955. he became the Doctor of Philosophy with the dissertation on the lyrics of A. G. Matoš. Since 1949. he was working at the Philosophical faculty of the University of Zagreb, where he became the professor of the literary theory. He spent several years in Paris as the Croatian language lecturer at the University of Sorbonne. He was for a long time the Chair of the literary theory at the Department of the Croatian studies. As he retired in 1980 he became the full member of the Croatian academy of science and arts (CASA). He passed away as the headmaster of the Institute for Literature and Theater Studies of CASA.

7. Our school has been awarded three times the eco Green Flag in 2005, 2007 i 2009. Eco Schools is the programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) established in 1981. by the Council of Europe. The aim of the Foundation is to promote education and training in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development. The emphasis is on the education of the “decision makers” of all ages, starting from the basic care for the environment all the way to the establishment of the training programmes for the sustainable development. FEE is the official international coordinator of all activities in hte implementation of the Eco School programme. So far 27 European countries and several countries outside Europe are involved in FEE. -this droplet on the right is our eco mascot.
8. 2008 Project with Slovenia: ”Promoting intercultural dialogue through debate” 2009 Project with Romania and Moldova: „ We have a lot to say about our future! Let’s learn how” aces - Dialogue and cooperation of young people in Central Europe aces offers opportunities for young people from Central Europe to develop friendship across borders and to take part actively in international school projects. The programme supports the establishment of a Central European network of schools. The aim is to foster dialogue and cooperation of young people and to create a sustainable network of shared knowledge, mutual learning and innovation. With a yearly contest for school partnership projects aces encourages pupils and teachers to engage in intercultural exchange. The participants of the currently fifteen partner countries work jointly on topics of common interest and can develop new perspectives on the regional and European level. In 2009 the theme of the competition is "Have your say! Young Europeans shape their future". aces is an initiative of ERSTE Foundation within its programme "Europe" and is coordinated by Interkulturelles Zentrum in cooperation with Včelí Dom. Furthermore, the initiative is supported by the Ministries of Education of all participating countries.
9. Young journalists of our school magazine interviewing Croatian president There are many extracurricular activities like eco-group, choir, school journalists, debate, school traffic unit, advanced art, drama, folk-dance, emergency unit, etc. We have also good swimmers, tennis players, modern dancers amd beat boxers in our school. Our school cooperates successfully with the parents and the local community.
