I don't actually have information about the results of recent sporting events. As an AI assistant created by Anthropic to be helpful, harmless, and honest, I don't follow or keep records of sports
This document provides profiles for four individuals - Eric Simundza, Anatalio Ubalde, Russ Riblett, and Mark Hays - listing their roles, contact information, physical attributes, and baseball statistics in a mock baseball roster format. It presents these profiles as a "starting lineup" for an organization called "Moneyball Economic Development".

5. Moneyball concepts
• Traditional wisdom of baseball insiders during the
last century is subjective and often flawed.
• Stolen bases, RBI, and batting averages are relics
of 19th century statistics.
• A’s would use better indicators to compete with
big $ teams: On-base and slugging %.
• 2002 A’s budget = $41M, Yankees = $125.
• Staying ahead of the curve requires an outsider’s
view and increasingly better data analysis.
• Today, the Mets, Yankees, Padres, Cardinals, Red
Sox, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Indians, and Blue
Jays have have full-time data analysts.
6. • All successful sports teams use data
to evaluate and project
performance.
• But that was actually small data:
small data sets with basic math –
addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division.
• Yesterday’s advantage is today’s
new normal.
Today, “Big Data” is the new
competitive advantage.
• What does today’s Moneyball look
like?
7. Today’s Moneyball
• Measure everything.
• Which players match up?
• Which play to use in each scenario depending on the
time of game, who is in the game, etc.
• The computer informs and guides the decisions of
coaches and managers.
• Pervasive: this will be everywhere in the next few
years. Think the rich dads in Silicon Valley aren’t going
to make this available for their kid’s soccer team?
9. Big Data Moneyball is
for more than just sports.
It’s for every industry.
It’s for economic development.
It’s for you.
…that is, if you want to win.
10. The companies and EDOs that will
succeed are those that embrace data.
• And not just any
data, but the MOST
and BEST data.
• The more data you
have and use, the more
you WIN.

Who lost the Super Bowl last year?
Who lost the World Series last year?
Who lost the NBA Finals last year?
Who lost the Stanley Cup last year?
Things have changed a lot in the past few years but many Edpros haven’t been been able to pay attention. It’s not their fault because they are so busy with their day-to-day tasks that they have missed some of the global changes. Many Edpros think the cheese is still on their plate. But actually their competitors are already eating their lunch.
Less savvyEdpro though it was enough to provide property inventories, limited demographics, a list of major employers, and their stand-alone website would do the job. That’s is what Anatalio referred to as small data. But things have changed. Today’s successful EDOs practice big data.
`Let me ask you a question: Raise your hand if you like people selling you things? OK, now how many of you like buying things you want? So do you see the difference? The way to succeed is to get people to buy your community – not because you want to sell it to them – but because they have sold themselves. Everyone is happy. But to do this you have to give them the tools to convince themselves. Now, let’s look at how you use the most and best data to get businesses to convince themselves that they should invest in your community.
How many of you, because I said the word ‘smart phone’ are obsessing about checking yours right now? I can see some of you are starting to sweat because you don’t want anyone to see you check it because I brought it up but you really, really, really want to check your phone . OK. I’ll make a deal with you. If there is anyone here who is willing to give up their smart phone for the entire conference I’ll take you out to a fancy dinner. Any volunteers? None? Isn’t that amazing. A few years ago no one in this room owned one and now you can’t live without it. But at least that shows us how important they are to us.
How would you feel if, because you were using your smartphone, you only received ½ of your emails, or half of your search results, or half of your pictures? That’s completely unacceptable. People want the same quality of service on their phones as their desktop and tablet.
So we know that important work gets done on phones and people want a complete experience using them. (click) Well, your customers feel the same as you. So how do you help people get their work doe on their phones and do you give them the same quality on their phone as your website?
Russ, that was a great analysis of how EDOs can use their data to convince businesses to invest in their community. I’d like to share a different side to economic development moneyball and the value of data. I want to share how other people’s data impacts whether you have more opportunities to succeed.
The second place winner was ZoomProspector.com. According to the Department of Commerce, ZoomProspector.com is a website that provides a way for new and expanding businesses to find, compare and deeply analyze communities and available properties nationwide. This tool will be valuable for American companies looking to expand their operations inside the United States or companies choosing to bring jobs back from overseas.
The first place winner is SizeUp. In the words of the Department of Commerce, SizeUp “provides a comprehensive overview to small- and medium-sized business about their competitiveness and where to find resources to improve. This will improve the success of small businesses so they can prosper and create new jobs.”
