CDW is a reseller of computer hardware, software, and supplies. CDW takes orders via mail order, telephone, and the internet. CDW is headquartered in Vernon Hills, Illinois. CDW was founded in 1984 by Michael Krasny. He put an ad in the Chicago Tribune and got a lot of responses from it. He decided he could buy and resell computers for money and thus the evolution of CDW began. Mr. Krasny stepped down as CEO of CDW in 2001. John Edwardson replaced Mr. Krasny as a CEO and currently holds that position. Madison Dearborn Group is a private equity firm that took CDW from a public traded company to a private company in 2007 for $7.3 billion. Mr. Krasny donated $345 million of shares from the sell of CDW to charity.
CDW currently has around 6,150 employees in over 21 office locations. Our headquarters shown in the photo to the left is located in Vernon Hills, Illinois. CDW account managers help customers choose the right technology products and services to meet their needs. Account Managers build consultative, long-term relationships with customers nationwide. With the help of specialists, CDW vendors, and peers you have all the resources needed to drive sales and become a successful account manager.
Qualities of a successful CDW Account Manager include basic computer skills, strong organization and time management skills, strong interest in sales, ability to multitask, and good communication skills. All these traits are very important if you want to excel as a successful CDW account manager. I would put emphasis on the multitasking. CDW has state of the art on-site training facilities. Once hired as an account manager you will be intensely trained before you join the sales floor. CDW uses Miller Heiman sales training strategies to teach their employees the right way to approach selling. The training will prepare you for the challenges you will face once you join the sales floor. The training will be paid and last for three months. During the training you will learn sales strategies, technical aspects of CDW products, CDW’s sales applications, and what is expected of you day to day once you hit the sales floor.
It is the account manager’s responsibility to make sure that they are doing everything possible to meet their quota. CDW has a strict termination plan for account managers. Account manager’s goals are monthly. If you miss your goal for the month you are issued a warning and placed on probation. If you continue to miss your probationary goal for the next two months you will be terminated from your position.
CDW offers a generous base salary to go along with uncapped commission plan. The commission plan is based off your revenue and gross profit and the bonus is set by tiers. For example if you have $200,000 in revenue for the month and $80,000 in profit you would fall into a tier that will let you know the bonus amount for those numbers. Commission checks will be paid out the second pay check following your monthly quota attainment. For example if you hit goal in January, then February you will receive your bonus check for the month of January.
