A talk I gave to some of our reporters about using Twitter as a platform for reporting live news events -- and not just to push links. Refers to Ottawa Citizen Twitter coverage of several live news events, including the criminal trial and acquittal of Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien.

- IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER Few readers will be reading your coverage of a news event from start to finish. They have to know what’s going from any Tweet anywhere. - May have to repeat context a lot, wastes characters, but worth it. - NO CLEAR STYLE FOR JOURNALISTS HERE but we should try to mirror newspaper style as closely as we can
- TONE - Twitter is still a social media and personality matters CHALLENGE Is to show personality without revealing biases or eroding credibility INSTANT FEEDBACK helpful from readers. O’Brien trial getting updates CORRECT AS YOU GO - May not get spellings right the first time. Misunderstandings,etc. CORRECTING GIVES YOU CREDIBLITY
- BIAS - You will always been seen as a reporter. Have to be careful not to offer opinions on topics you might cover. A bit like elxn signs. INDEMNITY - Libel. No Citizen policy yet on social media. Usual cautions apply. Very easy to jump to conclusions. PUBLIC - Anything you post on Twitter is can be seen by anyone, not just followers. Steve Maher example.
