Hyderabad: On the occasion of World Liver Day, surgeons at Global Institute of Liver,
Pancreas Diseases and Transplantation at Global Hospitals, Hyderabad announced a
new milestone in successful liver transplants at the hospital.
Doctors at Global Hospitals, Hyderabad who have been pioneering medical and surgical
innovations for liver disease management for over a decade, have announced that they
now successfully performed 300 liver transplants with a very high success rate.
Addressing a press conference, Dr. K. Ravindranath, Chairman & Managing Director,
Global Hospitals Group, said, “Global Hospitals Group as a multi-super specialty, tertiary
care hospital chain is India’s largest multi-locational, multi-organ transplant centre,
which performs liver, heart, lung, kidney organ transplants. The Group till date has
performed over 600 liver transplants. We have been consistently performing
successfully, a large number complex liver surgeries and transplants. We have the
largest team of specialists, comprised of Hepatologists, Liver transplant surgeons,
Critical Care Specialists and Anesthetists, who are supported by world class
infrastructure and technology and a strong commitment to deliver exceptional patient
care.”
“Our surgeons perform the widest variety transplants procedures on both adult and
paediatric patients such as split liver, auxiliary liver, swap liver. These are performed
through both cadaveric organ and live related donor programmes. I am grateful to
patients and their family for the confidence and trust reposed in us. I am also grateful to
the Media in enhancing awareness amongst people about liver diseases, causes &
prevention and transplantation as a unique solution to save patients with end-stage
liver diseases,” he added

India is home to 11 per cent of the world’s patients affected with chronic Hepatitis B
and the number of deaths from liver cancer or cirrhosis each year range between
100,000 and 200,000. It is estimated that about two lakh people are diagnosed with end
stage liver disease each year and about 0.02 per cent population (25000) need liver
transplants every year. “The need of the hour is to increase awareness about organ
donation,” Dr. K. Ravindranath said.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Tom Cherian, Head of Department, HPB Surgery & Liver
Transplantation, Global Hospitals, Hyderabad, said, “We are seeing a huge increase in
the number of paediatric liver cases. Children with end stage liver disease have a very
short and miserable life. Amazingly with transplantation, these children can go on to
lead normal lives and become adults. It is unfortunate that pediatric liver
transplantation services are limited in our country and I hope to make a difference.”
He also added that there is a high incidence of acute liver failure in India. “The saddest
part about acute liver failure is that it strikes young people in their prime. The second is
that it has high mortality with a 70-80% chance of death if not treated properly.
Transplantation completely changes this statistic and creates an 80 per cent chance of
surviving,” Dr. Cherian said.
As a commitment towards the society on the occasion of the World Liver Day, Global
Hospitals also launched public awareness programs with the theme “I Promise to Love
My Liver”. Various community based activities will be undertaken as part of the
campaign to sensitize citizens on causes; prevention and care that each individual needs
to undertake to have a healthy liver. To mark the occasion, the hospital is also offering
highly discounted special liver check packages which can be availed from April 19 to May
19, 2014.
